About the role

The role maintains customer accounts and logistical services by leveraging transportation networks, disposal and processing partnerships, customer relationship management systems, and operational reporting tools to ensure continuity of service, customer satisfaction, and achievement of business objectives. The position analyzes service performance, financial data, and customer requirements by utilizing business systems, analytical tools, and cross-functional collaboration to optimize resource deployment, improve operational efficiency, and support profitable growth.

The Logistics Specialist supports internal stakeholders and external customers by providing subject matter expertise, system-based problem resolution, and proactive service recommendations to strengthen customer retention, operational effectiveness, and long-term business relationships.

The Logistics Specialist reports directly to a Logistics Supervisor, who reports to the Manager of Logistics. The position does not typically maintain direct supervisory responsibility but may provide functional guidance, training, and technical support to less experienced Logistics Specialists and other operations team members. The role works closely with Strategic Account Managers, Customer Care teams, Operations team, Transportation providers, Sustainability teams, Accounting, Sales, Business Systems team, and external vendors.

The position operates within Casella's Logistics and Resource Solutions organization, which is responsible for coordinating transportation, disposal, recycling, and sustainability-related services across a diverse customer portfolio. The department functions in a dynamic, customer-driven environment where operational responsiveness, regulatory compliance, cost management, and service reliability are critical to business success.

This role serves as the central coordination point between customers, vendors, transportation providers, disposal facilities, recycling facilities, and internal operational groups. The position is responsible for translating customer requirements into executable service plans and ensuring those plans are carried out efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates customer waste, recycling, transportation, and environmental service requirements through the planning, scheduling, monitoring, and execution of service solutions to ensure contractual commitments, customer expectations, and operational objectives are consistently achieved.
  • Manages customer account activities by serving as the primary day-to-day liaison, responding to service inquiries, resolving escalated issues, and communicating service recommendations to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction, retention, and account performance.
  • Administers logistics and transportation services through the selection, coordination, and oversight of third-party vendors, carriers, and processing facilities to ensure safe, compliant, cost-effective, and reliable execution of customer service commitments.
  • Monitors operational and service performance metrics by analyzing transportation activity, facility throughput, service exceptions, and customer trends to identify improvement opportunities and support continuous operational excellence.
  • Maintains logistical, contractual, and financial records through the accurate processing of manifests, weight tickets, billing documentation, vendor invoices, and supporting business records to ensure data integrity, regulatory compliance, and accurate financial reporting.
  • Analyzes customer, vendor, and operational information using business intelligence tools, customer relationship management systems, and reporting platforms to support informed decision-making, forecasting, and service optimization initiatives.
  • Resolves service, transportation, system, and vendor-related issues through investigative analysis, root cause identification, and cross-functional collaboration to minimize operational disruptions and maintain continuity of customer service.
  • Supports organizational process improvement initiatives by identifying workflow enhancements, recommending system modifications, and participating in technology-enabled business solutions to increase efficiency, productivity, and service effectiveness.
  • Provides customer support systems expertise through the administration, validation, and utilization of operational, CRM, dispatch, and customer support platforms to ensure accurate information management, effective issue resolution, and enhanced user experience for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Logistics Specialist I - Typically possesses 0-2 years of relevant business, logistics, customer service, operational support, or supply chain experience. At this level, the incumbent develops foundational knowledge of Casella's services, customer requirements, subcontractor networks, operational systems, and business processes. The employee works under established procedures while building proficiency in customer account management, logistics coordination, data management, problem resolution, and business systems utilization.
  • Logistics Specialist II - Typically possesses 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in logistics, transportation, vendor management, customer support, operations analysis, or related functions. The incumbent demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of Casella's operational model and independently manages a larger portfolio of customer accounts, vendors, and service solutions. At this level, the employee resolves complex service issues, analyzes performance trends, supports process improvement initiatives, and serves as a resource to less experienced team members while maintaining high productivity and service quality standards.
  • Logistics Specialist Sr. - Typically possesses 6+ years of advanced logistics, customer relationship management, transportation, operational analytics, business systems, or vendor management experience. The incumbent serves as a recognized subject matter expert responsible for resolving highly complex operational challenges, managing strategic customer relationships, supporting significant process and system improvements, and influencing transportation, vendor, and service strategies. At this level, the employee provides technical leadership, mentors junior staff, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and applies advanced analytical, operational, and customer support system expertise to improve organizational performance and customer outcomes.

Requirements

Successful candidates will have an associate’s degree in business administration, logistics management, operations management, environmental studies, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Candidates should possess progressive experience in logistics coordination, customer service, transportation management, operations support, business analytics, customer support systems, vendor management, or related business functions.

  • Strong relationship management, communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, customer relationship management systems, operational software platforms, and reporting tools.
  • Experience supporting customers, coordinating multiple stakeholders, analyzing operational data, and working with business systems.

Pay

Hiring range: $68,000-$100,000 based on experience with room for career advancement.
