Locum Consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology

About the role

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a consultant in paediatric gastroenterology at the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH). GNCH has an ambition to become one of the best children’s hospitals in the world and a strong gastroenterology department is central to this. We welcome applications from individuals with grid or equivalent training in paediatric gastroenterology. You will join consultant colleagues in Paediatric Gastroenterology and consultant General Paediatricians with specialist interests in gastroenterology as well as middle grades in paediatric gastroenterology. The post does not currently include out-of-hours paediatric work, but as the department grows, we hope that this can be incorporated.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of acute and longstanding paediatric gastroenterology problems, taking independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to them.
• Contribute to the service delivering capsule endoscopy and wireless PH studies.
• Leadership and development of in-hospital complex nutrition team (enteral and parenteral).
• Work closely with nursing and other staff to create or further develop systems of care dedicated to the management of children with specific disorders, in keeping with the general philosophy of the department.
• Lead dedicated paediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinics.
• Undertake Continued Medical Education (CME) in accordance with guidelines stipulated by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
• Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review, with objectives based on Trust objectives such as fulfilment of fixed contractual commitments on the basis of a 42-week working year with due allowance for statutory holidays.

Requirements

• Primary Medical Qualification.
• Full GMC Registration.
• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within six months from the date of the Appointments Committee.
• CCT in Paediatric Gastroenterology or equivalent experience/qualification.

Specialist skills

• Wide experience in Paediatric Gastroenterology.
• Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
• Ability to coordinate the care of complex patients with other subspecialty paediatric teams.
• Experience in child protection/safeguarding.

Desirable skills and experience

• Higher Degree.
• Special skills training in the specialty.
• Evidence of expertise in paediatric endoscopy.
• Experience of the management of gastroenterological complications of stem cell transplantation.
• Experience in pH impedance study and/or wireless capsule endoscopy.

Management and administration

• Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
• Ability to run a service and participate in management processes.
• An understanding of Clinical Governance and engagement.

Teaching

• Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
• Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
• Ability to teach clinical, technical and practical skills.

Research

• Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.

Audit

• Evidence of participation in audit.

Special interests in specific areas of paediatric gastroenterology including IBD, GI immunology, adolescent medicine, nutrition, allergy, endoscopy or pancreatico-hepatology are welcomed.
