About the role

As a Locomotive Electrician at CN, you will perform inspection, maintenance, and repair of the electrical assembly on the locomotive fleet. This includes working on electronics components, computer systems, fuel injector systems, and troubleshooting locomotive failures. Duties are carried out in repair shops, on service tracks, or other railroad property.

Responsibilities

Inspect, service, and maintain locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations, including troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, cleaning, and adjusting parts.
Troubleshoot and diagnose engine malfunctions and make required repairs.
Assemble and start engines.
Use test equipment, lubrication equipment, and other vehicle repair tools safely and efficiently.
Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, recording details on prescribed forms.
Operate locomotives on shop tracks and test them after repair.

Requirements

Valid driver’s license.
High school diploma or equivalent GED.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must meet all medical fitness-for-duty requirements of the position.
Basic technical knowledge of electrical theory and troubleshooting techniques.
Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 70 lbs.
Good hand-eye coordination.
Ability to use measuring devices and understand visual displays.

Assets

Valid CDL for the class and type of equipment operated.
Ability to certify company equipment in accordance with regulatory standards.
Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems.
Welding skills.
Basic computer skills.
Automotive or diesel electrician experience and/or electrician diploma/apprenticeship.
Ability to work autonomously, adapt to different situations, and manage stress.
Good teamwork skills and positive interactions with others.
Strong verbal, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
Dedication to meeting quality, safety, and client satisfaction standards.

Working Conditions

Required to work varying shifts to cover 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and statutory holidays.
Overtime may be required at any time.
Physical work performed in shops, outdoors, or outside terminals, year-round in all weather conditions.
Working in confined spaces and adhering to CN safety rules and procedures.
Occasional travel to reach working sites or extended periods away from home.

Training

Newly hired Electricians undergo several weeks of paid training, including:

3 weeks at CN Campus (Homewood, IL) for classroom instruction.
2+ weeks at the local shop for on-the-job training.
An additional 3 weeks at CN Campus.

Training focuses on critical safety skills required for railroad work. Successful completion is mandatory to maintain the role.
