About the role

Locomotive Electricians perform inspections, major and minor repairs, overhauls, and servicing on all types of locomotives. You’ll work on equipment and structures that support freight distribution across North America, with paid training and opportunities to evolve your skills.

Working Conditions

  • Shift work with irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime
  • Work in a shop environment and outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Occasional work in confined spaces and at elevated heights
  • Frequent stooping, lifting, kneeling, bending, crouching, and climbing
  • Minimal travel required

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, service, and maintain locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations
  • Troubleshoot or repair, replace, clean, and adjust parts
  • Diagnose engine malfunctions and make required repairs
  • Assemble and start engines
  • Use test equipment, lubrication equipment, and other vehicle repair tools safely and efficiently
  • Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, recording details on prescribed forms
  • Operate locomotives on shop tracks and test after repair

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must meet all medical fitness-for-duty requirements
  • Basic technical knowledge of electrical theory and troubleshooting techniques
  • Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 70 lbs.
  • Good hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to use measuring devices and understand visual displays

Assets

  • Valid CDL for the class and type of equipment operated
  • Ability to certify company equipment in accordance with regulatory standards
  • Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems
  • Welding skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Automotive or diesel electrician experience and/or electrician diploma/apprenticeship
  • Ability to work autonomously, adapt to different situations, and manage stress
  • Good teamwork skills and positive interactions with others
  • Strong verbal, reading comprehension, and writing skills
  • Dedication to meeting quality, safety, and client satisfaction standards

Pay

$42.49 per hour (qualified rate).

Training

Newly hired Electricians participate in several weeks of paid training, including:

  • 3 weeks at CN Campus (Homewood, IL) – classroom instruction and knowledge checks
  • 2+ weeks at the local shop – on-the-job training
  • 3 weeks at CN Campus – additional training

Training focuses on critical safety skills required for railroad work. Successful completion is mandatory to maintain the role.
