About the Role
This position is accountable for the safe, effective, and efficient transportation of steel service center products and goods as directed by the Traffic Manager.
Responsibilities
- Meet and maintain all requirements related to holding a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within established time limits.
- Adhere to all State and Federal Highway Rules and Regulations.
- Ensure proper loading and placement of product, including weight distribution, prior to transport.
- Secure each load effectively to prevent shifting or damage during transport.
- Protect products from damage, including weather conditions, during transportation.
- Inspect fleet equipment to ensure it is in good working order and kept clean during use.
- Support the use of new technology and innovative equipment installed in trucks.
- Maintain a professional, polite, and efficient demeanor with customers, co-workers, supervisors, customs officials, law officers, and the general public.
- Employ safe driving practices at all times.
- Prepare materials for unloading at the destination and supervise the unloading process.
- Immediately report any problems or accidents to the Traffic Manager and appropriate Law Enforcement Officials.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrated reliable work history.
- Must be detail-oriented with a strong focus on precision and quality in all tasks.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- At least 21 years old.
- Must have a CDL with proper endorsements.
- Safe driving record required.
- Must pass DOT physical exam and drug test; subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Minimum of 6 months verifiable experience driving Class A vehicles.
Training Program
Drivers with 6 months but less than 2 years of experience will need to complete the “Gearing Up” program before driving alone:
- Complete and pass 20 JJ Keller online classes.
- Participate in a 1-week ride-along with a rotation of current drivers and delivery routes, including a low-speed driving skills examination on company property.
- Complete a 30-day field training program driving with an experienced driver, covering city, rural, and interstate routes. A third-party firm may be used for training at local management's discretion.
- Pass two check rides (one with a supervisor) covering ELD operation, pre-trip inspections (DVIR), cargo securement, turning and backing, and driving in various conditions.
- Upon successful completion of check rides, the driver will enter a 3-month probationary period before normal driving operations.
