Load Checker

About the role

Verifies and keeps records on incoming and outgoing shipments and prepares items for shipment. Maintains an inventory of products in the warehouse and outside pipe storage yard. Moves product around and loads and unloads trucks using a forklift.

Responsibilities

• Follow and promote company safety rules and policies, and adhere to accepted safe work practices.
• Safely operate forklifts to move pipe and materials to and from production areas, pad, scales, and warehouse, and to load and unload trucks.
• Compare identifying information and count, weigh, or measure items of incoming or outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records.
• Determine the most cost-effective method of transportation.
• Affix shipping labels or stencil shipping information on cartons and containers.
• Assemble wooden or cardboard containers.
• Insert items into containers to ensure damage-free shipments.
• Use hand tools such as hammers or banders to secure boxes or containers for shipment.
• Post weights, shipping charges, and affix postage.
• Unpack and examine incoming shipments; reject damaged goods, record shortages, and correspond with shipper to rectify damages and shortages.
• Examine outgoing goods to ensure shipments meet specifications.
• Maintain inventory of shipping materials and supplies; organize these materials in the warehouse.
• Demonstrate competence in load construction, including multi-stop loads.
• Perform daily checks on forklifts to ensure they are in safe working order.
• Attend required training sessions and wear necessary safety equipment (e.g., hearing protection, safety glasses).
• Train and direct temporary workers and new hires.
• Learn new tasks and take on individual responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• One year of experience in forklift driving.
• Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in changing situations.
• Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical demands

• Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, and controls.
• Frequently required to walk, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
• Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or climb stairs.
• Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment

• Regularly works near moving mechanical and hydraulic equipment.
• Normally works in outside weather conditions.
• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.
