GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the school principal and supported by the K-12 Academic Support Coordinator, the position is responsible for providing instructional support for students who are not proficient in middle or high school reading. Applicants must have demonstrated the ability to design and manage whole group, small group, independent, and computer-supported instructional settings using the foundations of evidence-based literacy instruction. Secondary literacy teachers must exhibit leadership skills and the capacity to work collaboratively with teachers to support the literacy development of all learners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plan an instructional program of study that, as much as possible, meets students' needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Regularly and consistently meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
  • Analyze and interpret student reading assessment data to inform and differentiate instruction, identify areas for improvement, and develop targeted intervention strategies to enhance student literacy outcomes.
  • Create a classroom environment that encourages student involvement in the learning process, enabling each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate these objectives to students.
  • Establish learning objectives consistent with the appraisal of student needs, the requirements of the VBCPS curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development.
  • Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Ensure safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, VBCPS policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Aid the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develop reasonable rules for classroom behavior and procedures and maintain order in the classroom fairly and justly.
  • Make provision to be available to students and parents for educational-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
  • Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and the community that reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of VBCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, VBCPS policies, and effective instructional practices;
  • Thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process;
  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education;
  • Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum.
  • Knowledge of best evidence-based practices in reading instruction and intervention.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have or be eligible for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education.
  • PREFERRED: Reading Specialist Endorsement or English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls.
  • Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching.
  • Occasional stooping and kneeling.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely.
  • Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
