Keys to Literacy is dedicated to strengthening reading and writing instruction at every level through evidence-based literacy coaching, leadership development, and professional learning. We partner with educators, school and district leaders, State Departments of Education, and Institutions of Higher Education to deliver comprehensive literacy solutions. Through professional development, coaching, consulting, and training, we provide support across in-person, virtual, and asynchronous formats to meet the evolving needs of our partners. Employment Type: Part-Time Variable Non-Exempt Hourly

Location

Location: This is a remote position with expectations of on-site partnership. This position requires weekly travel to partner school sites. We are specifically targeting candidates located in the central and eastern time-zones. Travel: Travel typically is up to 6-8 days on site per month. Office Hours: Please plan to spend on average 7 hours per day at a school visit. Site visit days require up to a half day of remote preparation work.

The Opportunity

The Literacy Leadership Consultant partners with district and school leaders to improve the systems and structures necessary for increased literacy outcomes that are aligned with the Science of Reading. Through leadership/instructional coaching utilizing a job-embedded professional learning model, this role supports instructional leaders in implementing evidence-based literacy practices. The consultant works collaboratively with school leadership to implement the structures necessary for data analysis, assessment, intervention, collaboration and professional development, thereby increasing literacy outcomes for all students.

What You’ll Do

  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with principals, instructional coaches, and district leaders to understand current systems, priorities, and instructional context.
  • Use a structured literacy needs assessment and multiple data sources to identify root causes, set goals, and determine actionable next steps to improve literacy outcomes.
  • Examine schoolwide literacy data (screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, and outcome data) to inform instructional priorities, intervention planning, and systems-level decision-making.
  • Deliver ongoing, job-embedded coaching to school leaders that strengthens their ability to lead effective literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading and structured literacy.
  • Support leaders in establishing and refining systems for data use, intervention, professional learning, and collaborative planning (e.g., PLCs).
  • Design and deliver targeted professional learning experiences that build leadership capacity and support implementation of evidence-based literacy practices.
  • Engage leaders in clear, evidence-based conversations that promote reflection, ownership, and follow-through on instructional priorities.
  • Develop leaders’ ability to independently implement, monitor, and refine literacy systems to ensure long-term impact.
  • Collaborate with leadership teams to design and execute strategic, multi-year plans for sustained literacy improvement.

Qualifications

  • Masters (preferred areas: administration, special education, reading)
  • Reading and Administration experience (e.g., building principal, district level administrator or state level leader)
  • Successful school or systems level experience in improving literacy outcomes for students
  • Experience in improving school systems designated as "in need of improvement"
  • Experience using and leading the use of literacy assessment tools, including screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring assessments to guide instructional planning and support decision-making
  • Ability to guide building leadership in strategic decision-making that leads to measurable improvements in student outcomes

Preferred Background

  • Ability to coach instructional leaders including principals, district leadership and instructional coaches in providing effective instructional feedback to teachers in following a structured literacy approach
  • Experience with implementation and/or usage of High-quality instructional materials (HQIM)
  • An understanding of strong models of a literacy block and experience with creating a master schedule that ensures cohesion across tiers of instruction

Compensation Range

The Estimated Daily Rate For Each Piece Of Onsite Work Ranges From $645 To $845 Per Day, Inclusive Of Preparatory Time. This Calculation Is Based On: $85 - $100/hour for onsite work or virtual billable time$50/hour for non-billable time, such as administration tasks or internal meetings
