About the Role

Fresno City College seeks an equity-minded Linguistics Instructor to join its part-time faculty pool. The successful candidate will teach Linguistics courses, contribute to a diverse and inclusive learning environment, and support the college’s mission of closing equity gaps.

Fresno City College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2021-2022 academic year, 60% of students identified as Latinx, 11% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 20% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial.

Responsibilities

• Teach a part-time schedule of Linguistics courses as assigned.
• Use a variety of pedagogies and integrate instructional technologies for face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid formats.
• Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
• Employ effective teaching methods aligned with institutionally approved curriculum and course outlines.
• Evaluate student progress through tests, examinations, written assignments, and oral responses.
• Provide course syllabi to students and maintain classroom records in accordance with District Policy.
• Submit student grading and evaluation reports in a timely manner.
• Teach assignments in various instructional settings and times, including as needed.
• Fulfill all duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

All candidates must demonstrate responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to equity-minded practice in the classroom.

• Master’s in linguistics or applied linguistics; or
• Bachelor’s in linguistics and Master’s in TESOL, anthropology, psychology, sociology, English, or any foreign language; or
• A valid California Community College Credential; or
• The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency petition).

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
• Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom.
• Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to support racially minoritized students.
• Related work and professional experience.
• Experience working with students of diverse cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including students with disabilities.
• Experience supporting traditionally underrepresented student populations, such as students of color and foster youth.
• Facilitation of multicultural and cross-cultural communication with sensitivity to diverse backgrounds.
• Experience with under-prepared and high-need students at the community college level.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success.
• Proficiency with instructional technologies and computers.
• Effective communication with students and staff.
• Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials.
• Understanding of the community college mission and goals.

Pay

Newly hired part-time faculty will be placed on step one (1) of the Part-Time Faculty Salary Schedule. Salary classification is based on education and experience as outlined in the Part-Time Faculty Salary Classifications. Sick leave accrual is based on assignment hours.
