About the role

The Lineman program at MCC-Blue River is a full-time, year-long program starting in June. Approximately 40 new cohort students are accepted each summer.

Responsibilities

  • Install and remove poles, conductors, cables and equipment used in electrical power and distribution systems.
  • Build single stations and three phase transformer banks off of the pole.
  • Work as a power lineworker, journeyman lineworker, substation technician, cable splicer, utility worker and more.

Requirements

No prerequisites. Recommended classes: BUSN 190, ENGL 101, MATH 102 or higher.

Representatives from Evergy (formerly KCP& L), Independence Power & Light and Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative are on the MCC-Blue River advisory board to assist with course content.

Qualifications

Applicants must pass an evaluation boot camp and demonstrate skills through tasks such as digging holes, climbing a 40-foot pole, and assembling materials.

Skills

Strong physical fitness, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills are essential.

Schedule

The program runs from June to August, with classes held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. General education classes are scheduled on days without lineman classes.

Pay

Those who work in an apprenticeship (typically for the first four years at a utility company) make about $75,000 per year. Upon completion of the apprenticeship and becoming a journeyman lineworker, earnings can reach $100,000 or more per year.

Skills

Having all the recommended classes and setting oneself up to complete the A.A.S. will raise the applicant's score during the selection process.
