Line Mechanic D - A

Assist in performing work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal, and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities; drive and operate line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment. All job duties apply to overhead and underground equipment and facilities.

Location Requirement: The successful candidate must live (or be willing to relocate at their own expense) within 45 minutes safe driving distance of the Christiansburg Service Center, 2255 Prospect Drive, Christiansburg, VA, 24073.

About the Role

This job family includes progressive levels of responsibility and skill for Line Mechanics (D, C, B). Employees advance through training, experience, and demonstrated competency in performing duties under varying levels of supervision.

Line Mechanic D: Responsibilities

• Assist with the assembly, installation, maintenance, removal, and inspection of underground facilities, conductors, fixtures, structures, and associated equipment on de-energized and grounded overhead/underground facilities under direct or immediate supervision.
• Perform ground person duties under immediate or direct supervision as skill level dictates.
• Assist with loading, unloading, handling, maintaining, installing, and removing poles, towers, and structures.
• After completing D-100 or equivalent experience:
  • Operate company equipment (excluding digger/derricks and aerial lift vehicles).
  • Climb poles, ladders, and structures.
  • Work on de-energized conductors and equipment; may work on conductors/equipment energized up to 260 volts under direct supervision.
• After completing D-200 or equivalent experience:
  • Operate digger/derrick and aerial devices under immediate supervision.
  • Work on conductors/equipment energized up to 260 volts under immediate supervision of a higher classification.
• Assemble and install line material and hardware under direct or immediate supervision.
• Use and store hand lines, tie knots, and demonstrate basic working knowledge of ropes and rigging equipment inspection/use.
• Splice primary and secondary overhead wires using proper tools, hardware, and equipment (including crimping and compression tools).
• After completing D-200 or equivalent experience:
  • Operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers, and other sectionalizing devices under direct supervision.
  • Refuse line and transformer devices, progressing from direct to immediate to general supervision as skill level dictates.
• After completing D-300 or equivalent experience, test de-energized overhead lines and equipment; install and remove personal protective grounds under immediate supervision.
• Inspect and maintain tools, equipment, and work area in a safe, clean, and orderly fashion.
• Identify, inspect, use, and maintain all classes of rubber gloves/sleeves (PIPE) and insulating blankets, hoses, and covers (IPE).
• Inspect, maintain, organize, operate, and stock company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
• Perform housekeeping duties as assigned.
• Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
• Safely execute pole-top rescue and bucket truck rescue processes as training is completed.
• Protect or control work area: set and remove barricades, flags, signs, cones, and associated equipment.
• Maintain accurate records and submit accurate reports as required.
• Read and record information and registered readings on analog or digital kilowatt-hour meters.
• Complete Monthly Apprentice Cards and submit to local supervision for review.
• Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.

Line Mechanic C: Responsibilities

• Assemble, install, maintain, remove, and competently inspect overhead and underground facilities, including conductors, cables, transformers, fixtures, structures, and associated equipment under immediate or general supervision as skill level dictates.
• After completing C-100 or equivalent experience:
  • Perform work on conductors/equipment energized up to 260 volts under general supervision.
  • Assist with work on conductors/equipment energized at secondary voltages up to 600 volts under immediate supervision of a higher classification.
• After completing C-100 or equivalent experience:
  • Test, de-energize, and ground URD cable.
  • Splice and terminate URD cable.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and energize URD cable and equipment under immediate or general supervision.
• After completing C-200 or equivalent experience:
  • Work on conductors/equipment energized up to 600 volts under general supervision.
  • Use volt meters, amp meters, ground meggers, continuity testers, and other electrical test equipment for voltages up to 600 volts.
  • Cover up stationary tied-in (cannot transfer) primary conductors and equipment under direct supervision.
• After completing C-300 or equivalent experience, cover up, transfer, or move primary conductors and equipment under direct supervision.
• After completing C-400 or equivalent experience, perform duties outlined in the Line Mechanic B classification during the first twelve months, progressing from direct to immediate supervision.
• Build and erect equipment mountings (e.g., regulator and transformer platforms) and build overhead transformer installations.
• Conduct proper tagging procedures while performing switching of energized circuits.
• Perform inspection and troubleshooting of lines.
• Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.
• Complete Monthly Apprentice Cards and submit to local supervision for review.
• Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.

Line Mechanic B: Responsibilities

• Assemble, install, maintain, remove, and inspect conductors, fixtures, and associated equipment on overhead and underground facilities.
• During the first twelve months in this classification:
  • Assist with work on energized lines, cables, and equipment, progressing from direct to immediate supervision.
  • Replace fuses and operate switching/sectionalizing devices energized at any voltage under general supervision.
• After twelve months in this classification, perform work on energized lines and equipment, progressing from immediate to general supervision.
• Install and operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers, and other sectionalizing devices; re-fuse line and transformer devices.
• Test de-energized lines or equipment and place or remove grounds.
• Install, maintain, and switch residential and commercial underground distribution facilities.
• Locate and correct trouble using cable-locating and fault-finding tools/equipment.
• Install and maintain multiple street light circuits.
• Install three-phase transformer banks on poles, aerial, or ground-mounted platforms.
• Install three-phase regulator banks and energize or remove them from service.

Supervision Definitions

• Direct Supervision: A qualified person works hands-on with the person performing the task.
• Immediate Supervision: A qualified person is near the structure/equipment and in constant visual/verbal contact with the person performing the task.
• General Supervision: An employee of higher classification, knowledgeable of the task, not necessarily at the job site.
• Qualified Person: Line Mechanic or Supervisor knowledgeable of the task and capable of performing emergency rescue.

Requirements

Line Mechanic D

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Experience: No experience required. Line work experience or line school education preferred.
• Licenses/Certifications:
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Obtain appropriate licensing as required by federal/state law prior to the end of the probationary period.
  • Acquire CDL beginner’s permit within 60 days.
• Other:
  • Ability and desire to acquire necessary knowledge/skills to advance in the line of progression.
  • Must complete HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout (untimed, ~45 minutes).

Line Mechanic C

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Experience:
  • Minimum of one year of distribution electrical power line work experience, or
  • One year of related line experience (e.g., successful completion of a one-year electrical power line school certificate + 16 weeks internship/distribution line experience), or
  • Associate degree from an electrical power line school including 16 weeks internship/distribution line experience.
• Licenses/Certifications: Valid Class A CDL.
• Other:
  • Must have performed duties of and have all qualifications of Line Mechanic D or equivalent.
  • Ability and desire to acquire necessary knowledge/skills to advance in the line of progression.
