About the role

This position assists a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of special education students in a classroom environment. It also involves assisting students with daily living activities, clerical duties, and supporting classroom activities.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects.
  • Assist individual and small groups of students in completing classroom assignments, homework, and projects in various subject areas.
  • Answer questions, provide examples, and offer emotional support to students.
  • Perform daily living and self-care activities as assigned, including toileting, changing diapers and soiled clothing, assisting with positioning and mobility needs, and personal hygiene tasks.
  • Prepare typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments; record grades; take and record attendance.
  • Explain classroom assignments and homework instructions; assist teachers with implementing lesson plans and instructional activities; assist with student understanding of classroom rules and procedures.
  • Accompany and assist students in mainstreamed classes; escort students to and from buses and classes; push student wheelchairs; lift students in and out of wheelchairs; load and unload students on and off of buses.
  • Provide behavioral support for students according to established policies and procedures; monitor students during outdoor activities and field trips; monitor and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Aid students in developing independent living, organizational, communication, social, and self-help skills; assist with handling educational materials; assist students with eating activities as needed.
  • Assist students with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and related exercises as assigned by the position; utilize and assist students with adaptive equipment.
  • Follow health and safety practices and procedures; assist with maintaining classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly, and clean manner.
  • Support the FWCS Schools of Success mission and embody the six core competencies in daily work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong office computer and oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices and basic instructional methods and techniques.
  • Participation in training provided by the Special Education Department.
  • Two years of college experience, a two-year college degree from an accredited college, passed the Para-Pro Assessment, one year or 1000 hours of previous employment in a school or working with children, passed annual school-level evaluations, completed 48 credit hours of college level classes from an accredited college, or hold a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college experience.
  • A two-year college degree from an accredited college.
  • Passed the Para-Pro Assessment.
  • One year or 1000 hours of previous employment in a school or working with children.
  • Passed annual school-level evaluations.
  • Completed 48 credit hours of college level classes from an accredited college.
  • Hold a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
