Light Technician

This role is responsible for the basic maintenance, repair, and operation of Entertainment Lighting Systems for all shows, as well as preventive maintenance and basic repair on lighting systems. The technician assists with scenic changeovers and ensures they are completed safely and on time.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the lighting design as set by the design teams and document any modifications for operational circumstances.
  • Design and program professional, high-standard lighting for cabaret, variety entertainers, charter clients, and shows (e.g., comedians, magicians, singers).
  • Maintain an up-to-date, auditable inventory of all entertainment equipment as requested by the Technical Supervisor.
  • Perform maintenance testing and basic troubleshooting of the lighting rig prior to showtime; report malfunctions to the Technical Supervisor or Entertainment Production Manager.
  • Create and maintain detailed, accurate tracking sheets for the Technical Supervisor and/or Entertainment Production Manager.
  • Serve as Pyrotechnic Lead by:
    • Keeping records of on-board and offloaded pyrotechnic products.
    • Ordering all pyrotechnic products for the next voyage.
    • Manifesting off all previous week’s pyro storage containers, misfires, and unfired devices.
    • Testing and firing all shows as designed by the production team.
    • Partnering with the Bridge and Security to ensure a safe and secure environment for pyrotechnic operations.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed to exceed guest expectations and maintain high levels of product and service.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience running lights in a theatrical setting or four years of experience in various venues such as ships, theaters, or clubs.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of:
    • Musical theatre productions, backstage operations, and safe rigging practices.
    • Moving lights programming and design, including various Martin products (e.g., Mac600, Mac2k, Mac250krypton, Mac500, MAC TW1).
    • Laser systems, including Pangolin.
    • High End products (e.g., DL1, Catalyst).
    • Lighting systems such as Martin Maxxyz Compact, Light Jockey, Maxxyz PC, Mac 2000, Mac III, Mac 250, 550, 101, 301, Seachangers, color scrollers, High-end DL1s, various lasers, and Dataton Watchout systems.
    • Audio systems (intermediate knowledge).
    • Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Associate’s Degree in Technical Theatre or a related field of study, or equivalent vocational/technical training and/or experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk long distances, use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, taste, and smell.
  • Repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs, and lifting more than 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Physical ability to participate in emergency life-saving procedures and drills, including lowering lifeboats.
  • Full use and range of arms, legs, visual, verbal, and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions during emergencies.
  • Ability to work in varying temperature changes—indoors to outdoors.
  • Ability to pass a basic safety course.
