About the role
The California Post is seeking an experienced and audience-driven Lifestyle News Editor to direct coverage of lifestyle content in California—working across verticals including sex & relationships, fashion, real estate, parenting, travel, food & drink, science & technology, and general interest. This role offers the opportunity to set the lifestyle agenda in one of the most exciting cities in America.
Responsibilities
- Generate an endless font of innovative and agenda-setting daily trending and exclusive ideas.
- Assign and edit trending daily stories, as well as long-lead stories where needed.
- Oversee the production of daily stories—from writing headlines in the Post’s signature wit to ensuring SEO best practices, coordinating photo shoots, and managing imagery.
- Analyze web traffic to drive audience engagement and meet department goals.
- Monitor the news to identify opportunities to add depth through original reporting, first-person perspectives, and expert explainers.
- Manage lifestyle reporters on the team.
- Coordinate closely with departments such as photo, video, and audience development.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of progressive editorial experience in a news or high-volume magazine environment, preferably focused on lifestyle content, including experience in an editor or editorial leadership capacity.
- Excellent news judgment and sharp editing and writing skills.
- Deep understanding of the topics and trends that resonate with the Post’s audience.
- Proven ability to craft stories that succeed across digital platforms—from headlines to visuals and optimization.
- Proficiency in WordPress or a similar CMS.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple stories, writers, and deadlines simultaneously.
- Comfortable making fast, decisive editorial calls in a breaking news environment.
- Collaborative team player who can work across departments, including visuals, social, and audience development.
- Understanding of referral traffic, particularly from social, search, and Discover.
- Knowledge of driving and retaining audiences through deeper, engagement-focused content.
- Familiarity with analytics tools and performance metrics to guide coverage and strategy.
This role requires reporting to the office 5 days per week.
Pay
Base pay range: $95,000 – $120,000. This range reflects our good-faith estimate and may vary based on a candidate’s experience, skills, location, and other relevant factors. For bonus-eligible roles, targets are determined based on market benchmarks and individual contributions.
