California Reporter

About the role

ProPublica is seeking driven reporters to join our team in California. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience producing investigative stories, particularly in California, and a clear vision for how they would cover the state and its diverse communities. They should embrace a variety of reporting techniques and have a strong accountability lens, capable of both quick investigations and longer projects.

Responsibilities

• Pursue compelling, impactful investigative stories grounded in California but with national relevance.
• Explore the consequences of California's policies and leaders, providing unique insights into the state's unique vantage point.
• Collaborate with the team and across the newsroom, and with other news organizations regionally and nationally.
• Understand California's complex landscape and bring a fresh perspective to the stories you cover.

Requirements

• At least five years of experience producing investigative stories, preferably in California.
• A strong commitment to accountability and storytelling.
• Experience with a range of reporting techniques, including data analysis and engaging with readers and sources creatively.
• A proven ability to conduct thorough research and produce high-quality investigative journalism.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

• Ability to travel for assignments, training, and staff meetings.
• Eligibility to work in the U.S.

Benefits

• Full-time position with competitive compensation ($100,000 to $160,000).
• Comprehensive benefits package.

Pay

The expected salary range for this position is $100,000 to $160,000. Final salary will be determined based on experience, accomplishment, and location.

Schedule

This is a full-time position with flexible hours to accommodate the demands of investigative reporting.
