Founded in 1854, the Baltimore Jewish Community Center (JCC) has evolved into an organization of vitality and diversity. Responsibilities

• Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and monitor activities at the swimming pool to prevent accidents.
• Teach water safety by communicating rules and policies to patrons.
• Maintain order and cleanliness in the pool and pool areas.
• Provide instructions to swimmers and conduct or officiate at swimming meets.
• Administer first aid and assist with checking in/out items to the lost and found.
• Test and record water quality for temperature and pH levels, including adding chemicals to test samples.
• Ensure the safety of all swimmers during shifts and enforce all pool rules.
• Present a positive, professional image of the JCC to members and guests, providing outstanding service.
• Perform chemical readings and maintain pool conditions according to Maryland bathing code.
• Maintain routine cleanliness of the pool area, including scrubbing decks, railings, and scum-lines.
• Participate in regularly scheduled in-service training.
• Maintain high personal physical fitness and readiness to react in emergencies.
• Assist Aquatics staff in other areas as needed.

Requirements

• Lifeguard certification (candidates with certifications from other agencies may be considered but must successfully cross over to American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification within the first 90 days of employment).
• Current Certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer (including use of AED) and First Aid.
• Baltimore County and Baltimore City Pool Operator's certification preferred (assistance provided for full-time positions).
• Successful completion of training in Bloodborne Pathogens, handling of hazardous materials (HAZMAT), Oxygen Administration, and child abuse prevention may be required.
• At least 2 years of lifeguarding experience preferred for full-time positions (references from previous employers required).

Physical Demands

• Ability to swim 500 meters (550 yards) continuously in under 15 minutes.
• Retrieve an object from 10 feet of water and return with it for 25 yards in under 1 minute and 30 seconds.
• Perform basic rescues required for American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
• Demonstrate proper CPR skills and respond appropriately to emergency scenarios.
• Ability to see and correctly identify objects at a distance of 125 feet, including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to remain at a post for extended periods of up to three hours without a break.
• Ability to enter the water as needed for rescue procedures and maintenance, even in wet clothing.
• Ability to use a ladder to access and descend from the lifeguard chair.
• Ability to use hand tools to clean the pool and pool area.
• Ability to remove an unconscious adult from the water with assistance and using appropriate methods.

Work Environment

The work environment for lifeguards is typically hot and humid. Air quality within indoor pools may be reduced due to increased levels of chloramines and ammonia compounds from pool water disinfection. The noise level in the work environment is usually high. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
