About the role
The Lifeguard position at the YMCA supports the organization's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This part-time role ensures high standards of safety, cleanliness, and member experience within the Aquatics facility.
Responsibilities
- Maintain constant active surveillance of assigned zones
- Recognize and respond quickly to emergencies
- Perform water rescues, CPR/AED, and First Aid as needed
- Enforce pool rules and identify potential hazards
- Complete incident and accident reports
- Remain calm and focused while managing multiple responsibilities and interruptions
- Meet the physical demands required to perform lifeguard rescue and response skills
- Assist with maintaining a clean and organized pool deck
- Conduct safety and equipment checks
- Regularly monitor and record pool temperature, chlorine and pH levels based on city and state health standards
- Complete assigned deck duties and facility tasks
- Participate in mandatory lifeguard in-service trainings
- Provide excellent customer service
- Work independently and collaboratively with participants of all ages and backgrounds
- Build positive relationships with members and staff
- Promote YMCA programs when appropriate
- Demonstrate YMCA core values in all interactions
- Show strong attention to detail, communication, and interpersonal skills
Requirements
- 16 years of age or older
- Completion of lifeguard training
- Strong attention to detail required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Able to work with many interruptions, handling multiple tasks in a calm and responsible way
- Able to demonstrate a high level of maturity, patience, dependability, and the desire to work with all ages, especially children
- Able to show initiative in the absence of supervision
- Able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
- Able to adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals
Qualifications
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure
- Physical stamina and endurance for the job requirements
- Knowledge of aquatic safety practices and emergency response procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively with members and staff
- Understanding of YMCA core values and commitment to community involvement
