About the role

Lifeguard Part‑Time position with South Suburban Parks and Recreation. The role involves overseeing recreational and lap pools (indoor and outdoor), providing excellent customer service, supervising the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies. The organization’s mission is to foster healthy living through stewardship of the environment, parks, trails, and open space by providing recreational services and programs.

Responsibilities

• Oversee recreational and lap pools (indoor and outdoor)
• Provide excellent customer service to patrons
• Supervise the aquatics area to prevent accidents
• Assist swimmers in need
• Respond to emergencies promptly and effectively
• Create a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment that promotes swim safety
• Enforce all pool standards and rules
• Maintain vigilance and readiness to act in emergency situations

Requirements

• Minimum age of 15 years at time of application
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification at time of hire (or willingness to complete the free training course with a work commitment)
• Successfully pass the District Water tests
• Available to work varied hours between 5:15 am–12:00 pm and 10:00 am–4:00 pm
• Ability to work a minimum of 10–15 hours per week during fall, winter, and spring; 15–20 hours per week during summer
• Flexibility to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends as needed

Qualifications

• Previous aquatics or lifeguarding experience
• Professional and welcoming demeanor
• Effective communication with the public and team members
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to swim to safety with a full‑grown adult and remain calm in emergencies
• Flexibility to work a variety of shifts
