About the role

A Lifeguard is a trained and certified safety professional responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of people in and around an aquatic environment. In this role, you will ensure the safety of all users through continuous surveillance of the aquatic area, enforce aquatic guidelines, and be prepared to implement the Emergency Action Plan when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of users through continuous surveillance.
  • Inspect the facility, perform preventative maintenance, and report any unsafe conditions or equipment failures.
  • Perform regular water chemistry tests and accurately log the readings to maintain water quality and compliance.
  • Assist with the setup and teardown of equipment for various aquatic programs, special events, and open recreation activities.
  • Maintain an up-to-date American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and preserve the required fitness level (swimming skills, strength, and endurance) necessary to effectively respond to all aquatic emergencies.
  • Maintain a clean and inviting aquatic environment.
  • Understand and enforce Wellness and Recreation and area-specific guidelines.
  • Implement the emergency action plan and manage risk.
  • Attend required training and monthly staff meetings.
  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants, and guests.
  • Perform other related duties to support the overall functioning of the department.

Requirements

  • Current full-time NC State student, demonstrated by enrollment in at least 12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credit hours.
  • Current or ability to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid certification before position commencement.
  • Complete the American Red Cross In-Water Testing:
    • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface, then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both (swimming on the back or side is not permitted; swim goggles are allowed).
    • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
    • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
    • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds:
      • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (the face may be in or out of the water; swim goggles are not allowed).
      • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
      • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
      • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
  • Flexibility in availability to potentially work early mornings, late nights, weekends, and breaks.

Working Conditions

  • Indoors in a non-air-conditioned space.
  • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting weight up to 40 lbs regularly.
  • During an emergency, a lifeguard must possess the physical ability to perform immediate, strenuous, and sustained effort for the rescue or extraction of a victim of unknown weight.
  • Potentially loud and busy work environment that requires strong communication and observation skills.
  • Exposure to potential safety hazards and adherence to the emergency action plan to mitigate risk.

Pay

$12.00/hour

Schedule

Maximum 20 hours per week as scheduled.
