LIFEGUARD

About the role

The Lifeguard will perform general lifeguard duties at Veterans Memorial Pool, adhering to the standards set by the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification program, or other City approved lifeguard training program. The Lifeguard will observe and enforce safe behaviors while maintaining a high standard of professionalism and excellent customer service to all patrons.

Responsibilities

• Comply with the City of Walla Walla's work safety standards and procedures.
• Administer first-aid and follow standard procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne pathogens.
• Respond quickly to rescue and emergency situations.
• Prepare and set-up equipment prior to the start of each shift.
• Wear a uniform (lifeguard shirt, swimsuit, emergency fanny pack, and whistle).
• Adhere to the American Red Cross, or other City approved lifeguarding training program standards on lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR.
• Attend all mandatory trainings; complete accurate reports of rescues, accidents, incidents, and first-aid treatments.
• Perform general pool and facility maintenance; skim water surface, within the lifeguard break room area empty trash receptacles and replace liners, restock paper and soap products as needed, adjust deck furniture, respond to pool contaminants.
• Facilitate the placement, including set up, breakdown, and storage of pool furniture; climb into pools and onto lifeguard chairs.
• Report needs and concerns to appropriate staff, including checking supply levels and reporting inventory needs.
• Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public and provide information as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Safety practices used in and around the operation and maintenance of public swimming pools.
• Knowledge of first aid, CPR, and lifeguarding standard procedures.
• Ability to respond appropriately to an emergency situation.
• Knowledge of basic swimming strokes (freestyle and backstroke).
• Interest and experience in working with kids in a caring and patient manner.

Tools and Equipment Used

• Nets, hooks, and flotation devices for retrieval of equipment and personnel.
• Flippers, kickboards, life vests and other aquatic devices to support learning and recreation in a municipal pool environment.

Physical Demands

• Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
• Seeing, hearing, and speaking to exchange information.
• Repetitive hand movements.
• Intermittently stand, walk, kneel, stoop, bend at the waist and lift up to 40 pounds.
• Swim, dive and perform rescue activities as needed.

Work Environment

• Outdoor environment, in and around swimming pools and aquatics facilities.
• Exposure to pool chemicals.
• Extended exposure to sunlight.
• Heat.
• Water and wet surfaces.
• Work is performed in all types of weather conditions and around children, noise, and distractions.

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Must be 15 years of age;
• Must have current lifeguarding certifications for water rescue, CPR, and first aid completed by the first date of assuming lifeguard duty.

Desired Qualifications

• Bilingual in Spanish.
