About the Role

As a Lifeguard at AbilityFirst, you will be pivotal in conducting and coordinating water-based programs and activities. Your role will ensure a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable swimming experience for all our participants.

Responsibilities

• Aquatic Safety & Instruction
  • Supervise swimmers and enforce all safety rules to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Respond immediately to emergencies and perform rescues when necessary.
  • Instruct Water Exercise classes designed for diverse ability levels.
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for participants.
• Pool Operations
  • Conduct daily chemical testing and maintain accurate records.
  • Perform backwashing and assist in maintaining pool cleanliness and functionality.
  • Monitor equipment and notify appropriate personnel of maintenance needs.
  • Document daily attendance of pool classes and participant use of the pool.
• Facility Maintenance
  • Ensure the locker rooms are clean, stocked, and safe for participant use.
  • Organize and launder towels and swimsuits.
  • Sort and store program participant swimsuits by group for easy access and hygiene.
• Other Duties
  • Uphold our commitment as a Mandated Reporter, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • Complete all required staff training assigned each quarter.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the mission of the program and organization.

Requirements

• A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
• 1-2 years of experience leading lifeguard trainings and aquatic classes is required.
• A valid American Red Cross Community First Aid, Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and other relevant certifications is required.
• The ability to obtain an American Red Cross certification within a month of being hired is required.
• Ability to support and move swimmers of varying sizes and abilities is required.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills is preferred.
• Problem-solver who handles emergencies effectively and has excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment is required.
• A valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
• Successful completion of background (LiveScan) check is required.

Special Conditions

• Mandated Reporting Requirements: The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
• Required vaccinations: Hepatitis B, TDaP, and MMR.
• Annual proof of flu vaccination or complete the Employee Certification of Declining Vaccination.
• TB Test, Live Scan (fingerprinting/background check), and Drug Screening as conditions of employment.
• Physical/fitness-for-duty clearance.
• For driver positions, applicants must provide a copy of their driving record from the DMV, a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance. Job offers are contingent upon a satisfactory driving record.

All staff members will be considered introductory employees for the first three months of employment. AbilityFirst reserves the right to extend this introductory period. Employees are at-will and may be terminated at any time during or after the introductory period.
