Responsibilities
- Identify with YMCA Lifeguard shirt, whistle, swimsuit, and rescue tube.
- Enforce all pool rules and address members to maintain a safe environment.
- Apply and consistently follow safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area, including standing at the edge or using an elevated lifeguard chair.
- Minimize distractions and remain alert, scanning the water and swimmers every 10 seconds.
- Move to different areas when multiple lifeguards are present to ensure appropriate zone coverage.
- Respond to emergency situations immediately, following the emergency action plan and providing first aid care when necessary.
- Maintain positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions before and during shifts.
- Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- Be 5-10 minutes early to every shift and record time worked accurately with minimal mistakes.
- Find coverage if unable to attend a shift and contact ahead of time if a scheduled shift cannot be worked.
- Work flexible hours as needed to ensure safety and proper coverage.
- Participate in in-service meetings and rescue drills.
- Clean the pool area, including removing potential hazards like fecal matter or vomit.
Qualifications
- Current Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid certifications as required by the NJ State Bathing Code.
- Acceptable Lifeguard, CPR, and FA certifications from YMCA or American Red Cross.
- Oxygen Administration certification from American Red Cross preferred.
- Demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
