Job Description Note: This position has been deemed critical by the School of Engineering Dean’s Office and is exempt from the hiring freeze. This is a two (2) year fixed term position. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. All candidates must be eligible to work and live in the U.S. Work Arrangement: This position is onsite, working at the Stanford main campus. Budgeted Salary: The budgeted base salary range for this position is $32.87 to $40.52 per hour. The Chemical Engineering Department was founded in 1961, and it was initially an outgrowth of the university’s Department of Chemistry. (Chemical Engineering website: https://cheme.stanford.edu/ ) The Abu-Remaileh Lab in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 to conduct research on lysosomal biology and lipid metabolism, with a focus on neurodegenerative and lysosomal storage diseases. This position offers the opportunity to independently conduct research utilizing mouse models of disease, alongside cell-based systems, organelle isolation, and mass spectrometry-based lipidomics. The successful candidate will contribute original scientific insights to projects investigating how lysosomal dysfunction drives disease pathology. The primary responsibilities for this position include managing a mouse colony, harvesting and processing tissues, performing histological studies and confocal microscopy, maintaining mammalian tissue cultures, conducting PCR and gel electrophoresis for genotyping, executing Western blot analyses, preparing samples for liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) experiments, and analyzing data. A minimum commitment of two years is required for this role. Additionally, the candidate will plan and execute experiments to support ongoing research projects, maintain organized records of experiments and outcomes, and perform mouse husbandry, dosing, and tissue collection in accordance with approved protocols. The role involves executing standard molecular and cell biology techniques, including PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, and immunostaining. The candidate will also prepare samples for LC/MS-based analyses, perform histological preparations, and conduct confocal imaging. Quantifying and analyzing image data, as well as contributing to the preparation of written documents such as protocols, presentations, and manuscripts, is essential. Preferred Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Neuroscience, or a related area.A minimum of one year of laboratory research experience.Hands-on experience with mice, including colony management, genotyping, and processing animal tissues.Proficiency in mammalian cell culture techniques.Familiarity with molecular and cell biology methods, including PCR, qPCR, immunostaining, and Western blotting.Experience with histology, confocal microscopy, or image quantification using Fiji/ImageJ is a plus.Prior experience with sample preparation for mass spectrometry is an advantage.Strong reliability with record-keeping and organizational skills. Responsibilities Core Duties: Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.
