About the Role

A laboratory in the Genetics Department at Stanford University School of Medicine seeks a Life Science Research Professional 1 to investigate cell-cell interactions in the outer retina in the context of mitochondrial dysfunction. The role involves generating and studying mouse models to elucidate mechanisms relevant to photoreceptor degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. This is an NIH-funded position in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment known for research excellence.

The position is fixed-term, ending February 29, 2028, and includes work with live mice.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute experiments in support of research projects based on scientific theory.
  • Independently conduct experiments, maintain detailed records, and analyze outcomes.
  • Apply life science theories and methods to interpret experiment results and suggest procedural modifications in collaboration with senior researchers.
  • Review scientific literature to stay current with new procedures and apply learnings to research.
  • Contribute to publications, presentations, and proposals as needed.
  • Assist with general lab maintenance, including managing chemical inventory, safety records, and lab stock.
  • Help orient and train new staff or students on lab procedures and techniques.
  • Interact productively with research team members and nearby labs to facilitate daily operations and ensure compliance with government and University health and safety guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field.
  • General understanding of scientific principles and demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge to problem-solving.
  • Experience with mice and molecular and cellular biology is particularly desirable.

Skills

  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Proficiency with general computer skills and ability to quickly learn scientific applications, databases, and programs.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
