Summary

The Life Science Engineer, Supervisor leads the technical function at an assigned Johnson & Johnson site under the Enterprise Laboratory Instrument Services (ELIS) program. The role supervises the site engineers, holds technical authority for the site, and owns the qualification standard that determines who is allowed to work on what. This is a supervisory seat with a reduced service caseload, not a full one. The Supervisor is expected to be hands‑on enough to judge the work, take the difficult diagnostics, and hold a technical conversation with an OEM engineer as a peer. Accountability is for people, competency, and the site technical standard rather than for a personal work queue.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising the technical team: Supervise the site Life Science Engineers and technical staff, including work allocation, priority and daily technical direction; provide hiring input, onboarding, performance management and development; hold the qualification standard that no engineer works independently on a platform until qualified, and sign off on qualifications.
  • Technical authority for the site: Act as the final technical escalation point for diagnostics and repair; personally handle difficult diagnostics; determine root cause (instrument fault, operator/method issue, consumable, sample, or environmental condition) before a service call is raised; make or endorse return‑to‑service decisions; escalate to the Technical Center of Excellence only when a fault is beyond site capability; provide input on repair vs. replace, end‑of‑life and capital replacement candidates.
  • Vendor and OEM technical governance: Review and challenge vendor/OEM diagnoses that do not match observed faults; review quoted repairs and reject or reduce scope disproportionate to the fault; verify vendor work was completed to specification; provide the technical basis for approving or rejecting vendor invoices; set standards for escort and vendor supervision, confirming third‑party personnel meet access, induction and safety requirements.
  • Self‑perform expansion: Own the self‑perform case for the site: identify platforms currently vendor‑serviced where Renovo capability is viable; specify tooling, test equipment, parts inventory and training needed; own qualification path for newly in‑scope platforms, including documentation and competency sign‑off; track first‑time‑fix and repeat‑fault performance and act on findings; feed conversion candidates and technical findings to the Site Operations Manager and the Technical Center of Excellence.
  • Service delivery: Carry a reduced service caseload alongside supervisory duties; own delivery of scheduled maintenance (SM) and demand maintenance (DM) across the site asset base from a technical standpoint; provide technical input to the SM plan (interval, scope, alignment with instrument use); support instrument installation, relocation, qualification and decommissioning; manage technical response when a critical instrument is down.
  • Data and record accountability: Own accuracy of the technical record across the site (fault found, action taken, parts used, labor time); ensure asset configuration, location and status are correct in the system of record after any work; hold the team to closing work orders with complete data for reporting, invoicing and contractual KPIs; ensure accuracy and traceability of calibration records and test equipment status; raise record discrepancies rather than allowing work‑arounds.
  • Quality, compliance and safety: Ensure technical work meets GxP and client quality system documentation requirements; support internal and client audits, quality reviews and regulatory inspections with technical evidence; own technical safety performance (hazard awareness, lockout practice, incident reporting, stop‑work authority); maintain technical SOPs and work instructions aligned to actual practice.
  • Escort and vendor hosting: Escort and host OEM and third‑party personnel in client laboratories and equipment areas; confirm third‑party personnel are inducted, badged, trained and compliant before entry; remain with third‑party personnel where required; verify work performed matches authorization and that the area is left clean, safe and operational; verify service reports or work records are complete before third parties leave and route for invoice verification; immediately escalate unannounced or improperly documented third‑party work.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands‑on service experience on laboratory or analytical instrumentation, or equivalent biomedical equipment service experience.
  • 2+ years of experience supervising or leading technical staff, including allocating work and judging competency.
  • Demonstrated depth across multiple instrument platforms (e.g., chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, plate‑based detection, centrifugation, cell culture, laboratory automation).
  • Ability to diagnose faults beyond the manufacturer service manual and to challenge vendor diagnoses on technical grounds.
  • Experience building or delivering a self‑perform service capability on a platform previously covered by an OEM (strongly preferred).
  • Experience working inside a client facility as an embedded service provider (strongly preferred).
  • Working knowledge of GxP requirements, calibration traceability and data integrity expectations.
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), including reporting.
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology or research environment (strongly preferred).

Education / Special Training

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in electronics, instrumentation, engineering technology, biomedical equipment technology or a related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Equivalent experience or military technical training considered.
  • OEM platform training on relevant instrument families required or supported after hire.
  • Training in laboratory safety, GxP and data integrity provided or required.
  • CBET or equivalent certification preferred, and supported where not already held.

Required Competencies

  • Technical Depth – solves escalated issues and explains how, not just fixes.
  • Technical Judgment – decides what is genuinely wrong before client money is spent.
  • People Leadership – develops engineers rather than only directing them, and builds coverage depth deliberately.
  • Standard Setting – holds the qualification line even when inconvenient for the schedule.
  • Commercial Awareness – recognizes and rejects quoted repairs that do not match the fault.
  • Accountability – owns the site technical outcome, not a personal work queue.
  • Documentation Discipline – holds the team to records an auditor and another engineer can both use.
  • Safety Leadership – sets the standard and stops work when it is not safe.
  • Integrity – can admit mistakes, is direct and truthful, and acts in the best interest of clients, employees and Renovo.

Success Measures

  • Scheduled maintenance completion against plan across the site.
  • Demand maintenance response and resolution time.
  • First‑time‑fix rate and repeat‑fault rate.
  • Faults resolved on site without OEM engagement.
  • Vendor diagnoses and quotes challenged, and value reduced or avoided.
  • Vendor work verified to specification before invoice approval.
  • Self‑perform conversion candidates identified, qualified and delivered.
  • Engineer qualification completion against the training plan.
  • Platform coverage depth (platforms with more than one qualified engineer).
  • Technical record, work order and calibration data accuracy.
  • Uptime and availability of critical instrumentation.
  • Technical team retention.
  • Safety performance and audit outcomes for the site.

Safety Requirements

  • Abide by and follow Renovo safety policies, procedures, and injury and illness prevention expectations.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for self and others when visiting customer sites, laboratories, offices, or operational environments.
  • Follow applicable customer site safety requirements, OSHA guidelines, and laboratory or facility‑specific procedures as required.
  • Complete required safety training assignments on time.

Physical Requirements

  • Regular work in active laboratory environments, including areas with biological, chemical, electrical and cryogenic hazards.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to kneel, bend, reach and work in confined equipment spaces.
  • Ability to move about a multi‑building site throughout the day.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 kilograms with appropriate assistance or equipment.

Travel

Travel approximately 10 to 20 percent, covering assigned satellite locations, OEM training, peer site technical support and program meetings.
