Responsibilities
- Supervise all aspects of BME daily operations at assigned site.
- Review, audit, and participate in activities related to problem diagnosis, repair, preventive maintenance, and quality assurance of equipment.
- Participates in the development of annual goals and objectives related to the BME team.
- Participates in the implementation and management of BME projects.
- Hiring/termination/scheduling of BME staff.
- Development of BME staff through progressive coaching/mentoring.
- Participate in the development and implementation of technical training for staff.
- Serve as a technical resource for the BME team and lab.
- Serve as the senior on-site technical resource for Biomedical technicians, providing technical guidance, escalation support, mentoring, and hands-on assistance with complex analyzer and automation repairs.
- Function as a working leader and perform hands-on preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of lab analyzers, automation systems, robotic systems, sample handling systems, and associated instrumentation.
- Support repair and maintenance of high-complexity laboratory analyzers and automation, including chemistry analyzers, hematology/immunoassay platforms, liquid handling systems, track automation, robotics, sample handling systems, and associated instrumentation.
- Participates in the evaluation of equipment service needs and communicates with clinical equipment users on proper device use and safety.
- Participates in the evaluation of maintenance and cost data related to laboratory equipment.
- Participates in the evaluation of service productivity and ascertains quality of equipment support services provided.
- Holds staff accountable for performance and behavior issues.
- Takes accountability for service quality of assigned staff.
- Works with both internal and external teams to develop and promote high quality service.
- Collaborates with vendors and external service leadership to ensure excellent service is provided.
- Works closely with customers to resolve problems and issues.
- Collaborate with leadership to help align BME and lab initiatives.
- Collaborate with Site Ops leadership to help ensure all lab projects involving instrumentation or equipment are properly planned.
- Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide range of biomedical equipment including mass spectrometers, analyzers, and robotic systems.
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert diagnosing and resolving equipment failures.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize equipment downtime and maximize productivity.
- Ensure all laboratory instrumentation complies with regulatory standards (FDA, OSHA, CAP, CLIA).
- Record Keeping - maintaining accurate and detailed records on all laboratory instrumentation to include service/repair reports, calibrations, preventive maintenance, spare parts inventory, and current operational status of equipment.
- Lead & participate in training initiatives for technicians and laboratory staff.
- Conduct risk assessments and failure mode analysis (FMEA) to improve equipment performance.
- Provide strategic input on budgeting, equipment lifecycle planning, and capital expenditures.
- Serve as a key liaison between laboratory management, reliability engineering teams, and vendors.
- Inform Managers/Supervisors of equipment needs impact on daily production and time parameters for completion of repair/service.
- Must be able to work independently, establish priorities and manage multiple projects.
Qualifications
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working as an engineer or technician (or similar role) working in a biomedical/imaging service industry/clinical lab setting.
- Five plus (5+) years’ experience working in a biomedical/imaging service industry/clinical lab setting, with one (1) year being in lead or SME type capacity.
- Must be able to perform hands-on troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory analyzers, automation systems, robotic/sample handling systems, and general biomedical equipment when needed.
- Ability to support analyzer and automation systems that include mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, fluidic, software, and communication/interface components.
- Ability to read service documentation, schematics, error logs, maintenance procedures, and vendor manuals to diagnose and repair equipment issues.
- Ability to serve as the senior technical resource on site for complex equipment failures and mentor Biomedical technicians through repair techniques, troubleshooting methods, and proper documentation.
- Ability to navigate the facility and individual labs/sites.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift light to moderately heavy objects. (1-10 lbs frequently, 11-25 lbs occasionally, 26-50 lbs seldomly).
- Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and procedures outlined in the Environmental Health & Safety Manual.
- Daily operations BME technical expertise.
- Working knowledge of clinical lab analyzers, automation platforms, robotics, instrument interfaces, mechanical systems, electrical/electronic systems, fluidics, pneumatics, and troubleshooting methods.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, calibration, parts replacement, service documentation, and equipment downtime escalation practices.
- High-complexity instrumentation/automation for clinical lab settings (i.e., LCMS, large chemistry analyzers, automated liquid handling robots, etc.).
- Knowledge of many different types of laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of electronic theory and technology.
- BME and general lab safety.
- CMMS Basic regulatory requirements (i.e. CAP, NY, ISO, etc.).
- Service/PM certification for high-complexity instrumentation.
