About the role

The Life Safety Code CAD Specialist (LSCCS) is Medxcel Facilities Management’s subject matter expert and resource for compliance with NFPA 101-Life Safety Code©, Federal, State, and local Fire and Life Safety regulatory requirements, as well as accreditation organizations such as CMS, The Joint Commission, and DNV, specifically pertaining to Life Safety Drawings. This role analyzes, establishes, and manages a library of CAD drawings to maintain life safety code compliance. The LSCCS reviews Medxcel FM’s needs, catalogs, standardizes, and updates life safety CAD drawings as required, and collaborates with Life Safety Code Specialists to ensure accuracy and code compliance. This position also provides expert consultation, education, and technical assistance to Medxcel FM’s operations, Ascension Ministry Facilities, and commercial facilities to ensure compliance with the Life Safety Code©. This is a remote, home-office position.

Responsibilities

Operational Support

  • Act as customer-facing point of contact regarding engineered life safety drawings and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Perform initial review of existing life safety drawings for accuracy and code compliance.
  • Provide field support in updating regulatory life safety drawings based on current or future-state conditions.
  • Exercise independent judgement and leverage logic-based solutions to design or update life safety drawings for accuracy and code compliance based on unique regulatory requirements.
  • Recognize the regulatory, operational, and financial impacts of, and exercise discretion when, recommending or requiring changes to the drawings or built environment for program and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) compliance purposes.
  • Communicate changes to local Facility Operations departmental leadership and Compliance team(s).
  • Communicate potential space allocation issues to the CAFM team to maintain data integrity and client cost reporting accuracy.

CAD/Drawing Library Support

  • Support system processes and policies for updating CAD/CAFM drawings with evolving field conditions.
  • Ensure enterprise Drawing Library integrity when modifying or collecting engineered drawings.
  • Utilize CAFM software to ensure facility space data integrity as drawing changes are applied.
  • Ensure seamless delivery of associated drawings and findings to client facility administration.
  • Train and develop other associates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Drafting, or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • NFPA Certified Life Safety Specialist for Healthcare (CLSS-HC) (may be obtained within 1 year).
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience, including education, preferably in architectural floor plan documentation.
  • Experience with healthcare industry-related regulatory requirements or experience in commercial fire protection, building maintenance, building construction, architectural science, engineering, safety, or related field.
  • Experience working with large institutional or commercial facility drawings/floor plans.
  • Experience in Life Safety Code© and/or International Building Code© compliance activities preferred.
  • Experience in supporting CAD/BIM drawing libraries for multiple facilities preferred.
  • Experience with Autodesk REVIT preferred.
  • Experience with CAFM software such as FM Systems© or Archibus© preferred.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of latest AutoCAD software.
  • Ability to recognize the regulatory and operational impacts of life safety assemblies and systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with oversized printer(s)/plotter(s) and scanner(s) preferred.
  • Experience working in a corporate environment in a healthcare facility preferred.
  • Ability to develop confidence necessary to act in a customer-facing consultant capacity.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks at an appropriate pace with little supervision.
  • Effective time management skills, capable of organizing individual tasks and managing personal time to complete assignments based on personal commitments.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a matrix team environment.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to be sensitive to and respectful of all internal and external stakeholders and customers while delivering necessary messages.
  • Must be able to travel 60%-80% of the time (overnight travel required).

Field Validation Work Requirements

  • Must be able to stand for long periods, walk lengthy distances, lift, climb, stoop, pull, kneel, and push to inspect and observe all facilities' life safety protective features.
  • Must be able to examine hard-to-reach areas such as utility spaces, mechanical rooms, and penthouses.
  • Must be able to climb over or under pipes, ductwork, or other obstructions.
