Life Guard II

About the role

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The role involves maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas while promoting member safety and engagement.

Responsibilities

• Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests.
• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area by continuously scanning the pool area from side to side and regularly walking around to check blind spots, steam room, and sauna.
• Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report).
• Maintains effective, positive, and culturally aware relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and for the duration of the shift.
• Lifeguards may be required to open or close the aquatics center.
• Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
• Fulfills any other functions designated by the YMCA Administration.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18.
• Ability to maintain certification levels of physical and mental readiness.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
• Demonstrates lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA/ARC standards.
• Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
• 5+ years of Lifeguarding experience is preferred.
