Lieutenant Of Police - Examination
About the role
Under direction of a Captain, supervises the activities of Patrol Officers and Sergeants in an assigned district or unit in the preservation of law and order, protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and prevention and detection of crime. Performs general police patrol duties and participates in the work of subordinates, with a greater emphasis on supervisory methods and responsibilities as well as some administrative tasks, particularly in the absence of a superior officer. Follows all operations and safety policies and safe work practices. Attends and participates in operations and safety training classes and demonstrates competence. Wears and properly utilizes safety equipment in accordance with Divisional policy at all times. Performs other job-related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicant shall hold regular status as a Sergeant of Police.
- Have actively performed the duties of the position, in the classified service of the City of Cleveland for one year at the time of filing.
Examination Components
The examination will consist of two components: a Written Technical Knowledge Test and an Assessment Center.
Written Technical Knowledge Test
- Closed-book test consisting of multiple-choice questions.
- Designed to assess understanding of job-related technical knowledge determined important to the effective performance of the Cleveland Division of Police Lieutenant position.
- No reference materials or electronic communication devices allowed.
- Applicants must present a government-issued ID.
- Only those who receive a passing score will progress to the Assessment Center.
Assessment Center
- Interview Exercise: Evaluates knowledge, skills, and abilities through job-related questions and scenarios.
- Critical Incident Exercise: Assesses ability to manage complex and dynamic law enforcement incidents, including tactical decision-making, command presence, policy knowledge, prioritization under pressure, and adaptability.
- All candidates receive the same questions and time limits.
- No knowledge sources or documents may be brought to the Assessment Center.
- Applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place via email to their City of Cleveland email address after the Written Test is completed.
Prohibited Items During Examination
- Any electronic device (e.g., smart glasses, smart watches, earphones, earplugs, calculators, radios, pagers, tape recorders, tape players).
- Scrap paper.
Salary
The prevailing salary for this position is $116,457.98 – $124,701.11 per year.
