About the role

Under direction of a Commander, supervises and directs the activities of Patrol Officers, Sergeants, and Lieutenants in an assigned district or bureau, in the preservation of law and order, protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and prevention and detection of crime. Work requires considerable independence, initiative and responsibility, with emphasis on administrative duties and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct the activities of Patrol Officers, Sergeants, and Lieutenants in an assigned district or bureau.
  • Preserve law and order, protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and prevent and detect crime.
  • Perform administrative duties and responsibilities with considerable independence, initiative, and responsibility.
  • Participate in the work of subordinates as needed.
  • Follow all operations and safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Attend and participate in operations and safety training classes and demonstrate competence.
  • Wear and properly utilize safety equipment in accordance with Divisional policy at all times.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Hold regular status as a Lieutenant of Police.
  • Have actively performed the duties of the position, in the classified service of the City of Cleveland for one year at the time of filing.

Examination Information

The examination will consist of two components: a Written Technical Knowledge Test and an Assessment Center.

Written Technical Knowledge Test

  • Closed-book test consisting of multiple-choice questions assessing job-related technical knowledge.
  • Questions are based on the job analysis results and the information contained in the Reading List.
  • No reference materials or electronic communication devices are allowed at the Written Examination administration site.
  • Applicants must present a government-issued ID at the testing site.
  • Only those who receive a passing score on the Written Examination will progress to the Assessment Center.

Assessment Center

  • Interview Exercise: Evaluates the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities related to job-related topics and situations.
  • Oral Presentation Exercise: Assesses the candidate’s ability to organize and deliver information effectively in a formal presentation setting.
  • Exercises are designed to evaluate competencies such as communication, interpersonal interactions, analyzing and deciding, managing activities, leadership, and adaptability.
  • Applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the Assessment Center via email after the Written Test is completed.
  • Applicants must present a government-issued ID at each portion of testing.

Prohibited Items During Examination

  • Any electronic device (e.g., smart glasses, smart watches, earphones, earplugs, calculators, radios, pagers, tape recorders, tape players).
  • Scrap paper.

Salary

The prevailing salary for this position is $135,171.25 – $144,653.28 per year.
