Lieutenant

Under the supervision of the Captain of Public Safety, the Lieutenant oversees patrol operations within the Department of Public Safety.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and daily supervision to all field supervisors, patrol officers, and booth officers.
• Offer field operational support and serve as acting watch commander and admin on duty while on campus.
• Review reports for accuracy and provide training/feedback to personnel to further their development.
• Refer reports needing further follow-up to investigations.
• Execute training plans for patrol personnel.
• Assist in updating and developing Departmental policies and procedures related to patrol operations.
• Work closely with all University schools and departments to prepare and implement Departmental leadership's vision on crime prevention.
• Collaborate with and support all members of Public Safety and the Pepperdine community to foster and maintain a positive, honorable, and professional work environment.
• Serve as Administrator on Duty Watch Commander while on campus and liaise with outside agencies as appropriate.
• Act as critical support personnel and report for duty, if safe to do so, in the event of a critical incident impacting Public Safety operations.
• Supervise Field Supervisors, Patrol Officers, and Booth Officers, ensuring performance standards are met for both internal and external third-party personnel.
• Provide coaching as needed.
• Assist in the development and execution of the Department's training strategy, schedule and lead training sessions, and monitor training records to ensure Departmental compliance.
• Participate in recruitment and onboarding of patrol and booth personnel.
• Perform other duties as assigned and uphold the University mission through work performed.

Requirements

• High school education or equivalent.
• At least five years of supervisory experience or prior law enforcement/public safety experience.
• Possess or obtain CPR and basic first aid certificates within the first 90 days of employment.
• Possess a valid Class C California driver's license and a good driving record.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written skills, including a pleasant disposition and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations.
• Ability to maintain confidential information.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
• Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in potentially stressful situations.
• Ability to work a wide variety of shifts, including potential late-night/early-morning hours, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to work extended shifts on short notice or shifts outside of regular scheduled hours.
• Ability to enter data into various computer software programs.
• Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and public safety methods.
• General knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, including the California Vehicle Code.
• Knowledge of investigative techniques.
• Ability to supervise others.
• Ability to assist in firefighting and rescue operations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of college education.
• Completion of P.O.S.T. Basic Modular Course Level III, Level II, and Level I; or P.O.S.T. Basic Academy; or P.O.S.T. Modules A, B, C, and D; or appointed as a Level One Reserve Officer prior to January 1, 1997.
• Hazardous Materials First Responder certification or higher.
• Past or present affiliation with Pepperdine University.

Pay

Expected pay range: $70,304 - $72,000 per year. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level.
