About the role

Instruct inmates in an established vocational training program in horse care and stable management according to an established curriculum. Maintain pasture lands, buildings, and equipment, and ensure the health, safety, and security of the facility and horses.

Responsibilities

• Instruct inmates in horse care and stable management under limited supervision.
• Maintain pasture lands and buildings, including mowing, fence maintenance, and other required tasks.
• Conduct sanitation, safety, and security inspections of all buildings, grounds, and vehicles.
• Ensure horses receive proper medical care, including vaccinations, medications, and minor medical treatment.
• Order supplies and feed as needed.
• Maintain logs and complete paperwork in a timely manner.
• Monitor the stable and surrounding areas to ensure security and safety.
• Interview, select, and supervise inmates assigned to the program.
• Complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• For State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for experience.
• For SCDC Minimum Requirements: three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including one (1) year of supervisory experience. A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
