Overview of the Role
The Licensing Division enforces and administers the city’s licensing codes and works to ensure that the City’s regulated business industry is clean and adequately regulated. This position will assist the division in enforcing prohibitions against liquor and marijuana being sold to people under the age of 21 and protecting public health, safety, and welfare. The position involves attempting to purchase alcohol and tobacco products from licensed retailers.
Responsibilities
- Periodic, as-needed work attempting to purchase alcohol, kratom, marijuana, and other age-restricted products while working with Licensing staff.
- Ability to testify at administrative hearings or in court.
- Work schedule will accommodate class schedules and other employment.
- Attempt to purchase regulated products, including showing identification or providing truthful or false responses to age-related questions, depending on the nature of the investigation. Licensing personnel will monitor the attempted purchase from inside or outside the licensed business.
- Work involves frequent entry and exit from vehicles at various locations during a single shift.
- Additional work may be required for testimony at civil or criminal proceedings under oath.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
- Education: Two years of high school completion
- Experience: None

Licenses and Certifications
- Must possess and maintain a valid State Issued Identification Card (ID) or Driver License
Working Conditions
- Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
- Physical Demands: Light work that involves moving no more than 20 pounds at a time. Frequently getting into and out of a vehicle and opening doors to enter and exit businesses.
- Work Environment: Throughout the city at various businesses in various weather conditions and environments.
- Equipment Used: Identification card or driver's license, cell phone, or city-provided recording or communications device.
The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
Pay
The hiring range for this position is $17.18 - $21.48/hourly.
