Licensed Veterinary Technician, Anesthesia
Job Summary
About the Role
The Licensed Veterinary Technician position is part of the Anesthesia Service at AMC. The position involves working 8.75 shifts totaling 70 hours in a two-week pay period. The technician supports the Anesthesiologists with anesthesia-related tasks, including managing both low-risk and high-risk cases.
Responsibilities
- Support anesthesia interdepartmentally throughout AMC
- Assist with anesthesia procedures, including mitigating anesthesia, troubleshooting, and developing drug and technique plans
- Train and mentor new anesthesia personnel
- Troubleshoot, operate, and care for surgical and anesthetic equipment
- Participate in an overnight anesthesia on-call rotation
- Accurately complete all necessary technical procedures and treatments, adhering to department and hospital protocols
- Provide anesthesia support for all AMC services
- Assist and instruct interns and residents regarding policies and protocols
Requirements
- Advanced anesthesia skills
- Experience as a Licensed Veterinary Technician for at least two years
- Working knowledge of pharmaceuticals and equipment used in sedation and anesthesia
- Ability to handle both low-risk and high-risk sedation and anesthesia cases, including special needs such as MRI imaging and airway surgery
- Ability to teach all levels of learners, including starting and peer technicians, assistants, interns, and residents
- Ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations
Qualifications
- New York State Veterinary Technician’s license or permit
- Animal handling experience and ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work successfully as part of a team
- Ability to work independently and proactively
- Establish and maintain effective, respectful working relationships with all stakeholders
Skills
- Knowledge of pharmaceuticals and equipment used in sedation and anesthesia
- Ability to handle both low-risk and high-risk sedation and anesthesia cases
- Teaching ability for all levels of learners
- Ability to troubleshoot and operate anesthesia equipment
- Composure in stressful and emergency situations
