About the role
ActivCare Communities are senior living communities built around a promise to love and care for each family as they do their own, combining highly individualized care, 24/7 nursing, specialized memory care, and support for residents as their needs change. The Speech‑Language Pathologist works not in isolation but in the residents’ homes, seeing how communication, cognition, swallowing, and functional independence affect daily life, collaborating with caregivers, nurses, families, activities and life enrichment teams, and other clinicians to make therapy functional and meaningful.
Responsibilities
- Help a resident with dementia communicate a need that others are struggling to understand
- Develop strategies that help a resident participate more successfully in conversation
- Support cognitive‑communication skills that allow a resident to remain as independent as possible
- Evaluate and treat swallowing and feeding‑related concerns within your scope of practice
- Help caregivers understand how to communicate with residents experiencing cognitive change
- Create environmental and communication strategies that reduce frustration and increase participation
- Support safe and meaningful mealtimes
- Help families understand what is changing—and what can still be preserved
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team when a resident's function or communication changes
- Help residents remain connected to the people and activities that matter to them
