Licensed Practical Nurse - Sheriff
About the role
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides practical nursing care to incarcerated individuals in a correctional environment. Duties include conducting health assessments, administering medications, providing patient education, and complying with medical, safety, security, and infection control policies.
Responsibilities
- Provide practical nursing care, including health assessments, medication administration, and patient education
- Respond to medical emergencies and perform CPR as required
- Carry out and document physician and dentist orders accurately
- Assist with medical exams, treatments, and specimen collection
- Maintain precise, confidential medical records
- Follow infection control, safety, and security protocols at all times
- Work collaboratively with healthcare and correctional staff in a fast-paced setting
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing Program and current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in correctional, emergency, or acute care nursing is preferred
Qualifications
- Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion
- Subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with City of Hampton criteria, if required by assignment

This is a non-exempt position. Details about pay will be provided upon hire.
Schedule
The schedule for this position will be determined based on department needs and may include nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and varying shifts.
