Essential Functions

  • Directs patient to exam room and prepares patient for exam or treatment by identifying height, weight, respirations, blood pressure, temperature, additional testing, and records same on chart.
  • Interviews patient to obtain history, allergies, reconciles medication list and records on chart as requested.
  • Writes or calls Rx after obtaining surgeon/provider authorization for all department surgeons/providers as needed. Charts as written in patient’s chart.
  • Emails, faxes, or calls in any insurance referrals. Follows up with referral number to specialist if requested.
  • Fills in for other LPNs, clinical assistants, and MOAs as requested. Answers telephone and performs other clerical functions as necessary (screen calls according to urgency and need).
  • Trains and maintains proficiency in the use of computer equipment and other computer programs as requested.
  • Attends to exam and procedure rooms, ensuring proper supplies are on hand, maintaining order and cleanliness. Orders medications or clinical supplies for the department as requested.
  • Administers prescribed injections/medications and records them on patient’s chart.
  • Routes patient after exam to proper area for ancillary testing or follow-up appointments, i.e., blood work, x-rays, and enters lab testing as requested.
  • Has basic knowledge of medications (side effects/contraindications, etc.), reads and reviews pathology results with patients, sets up and tears down sterile fields, and has basic knowledge of surgical instruments.
  • Assists surgeon with operative procedures both in the office and operating room if necessary. Maintains infection control measures including proper cleaning of surgical equipment and use of autoclave.
  • Proficient with autoclave sterilization process, prepares surgical trays as needed for procedures for the day, assesses signs and symptoms of infection and reports to surgeon and/or provider, and maintains knowledge and proficiency of dressing changes and suture removal.
  • Assesses signs and symptoms of infection and reports to surgeon and/or provider. Performs hepatitis checks and follows protocols to protect surgeon, patient, and nurse. May perform high-level disinfection based on departmental equipment.

Other Duties

  • As assigned as appropriate for LPN licensure.
  • Attends and participates in Department meetings, along with contributing to department/office goals.
