Licensed Practical Nurse - Occupational Health

About the Role

Bayhealth Medical Center is Central and Southern Delaware’s healthcare leader with hospitals in Dover and Milford, as well as stand-alone Emergency Department in Smyrna and a hybrid Emergency Department and Urgent Care in Milton. We offer various practice settings throughout Kent and Sussex Counties. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care to patients within Occupational Health and Walk-in, performing specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills in accordance with Bayhealth policies.

After competency verification, the Licensed Practical Nurse may deliver patient care services to the adult and geriatric populations, including but not limited to: obtaining and recording vital signs, drawing blood, administering EKGs, administering oral medications, transporting patients, obtaining specimens, performing point of care testing, and assisting with procedures.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret doctors’ orders, medication names, and lab tests.
• Perform focal assessments for established inpatients.
• Provide general basic nursing care, such as positioning patients, lifting and turning, assisting with bedpan/commode/urinal/bathroom use, and weighing patients.
• Provide exceptional customer service aligned with the Planetree philosophy.
• Perform routine, uncomplicated treatment procedures including enemas, application of hot/cold compresses, dressing changes, wound cleansing, obtaining vital signs (including orthostatic and rectal temperatures), and splinting extremities.
• Collect and record intake and output.
• Prepare and administer oral medications as ordered by the physician or APC; review medication history with patients.
• Assist with minor medical/surgical procedures in the practice setting.
• Perform venipuncture for blood collection and monitor patient condition before, during, and after blood withdrawal.
• Transport patients using a wheelchair or stretcher within offices and to/from vehicles; assist with ambulation.
• Identify the need for patient education and advise patients on their treatment plan.
• Recognize abnormal lab results and document treatment records for each patient.
• Immediately report observed changes in patient condition or behavior; document care in an acceptable medical-legal fashion.
• Report unusual incidents immediately.
• Set up for suturing and procedures using sterile technique; dismantle procedure sets and care for soiled instruments safely.
• Maintain competency in specialized Occupational Health testing (e.g., Hearing Booth, Fit testing, Titmus, PFT, Ishihara, Drug screen collections, Breath Alcohol Testing, DS Hair Collections).
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and compliance guidelines.
• Ensure compliance with Joint Commission regulations and other safety requirements, including disposal of sharps and contaminated materials, and safe storage of medications.
• Re-order supplies within budgetary limitations; maintain workstation cleanliness and restock exam rooms.
• Wash and change stretcher/exam table linen; empty dirty laundry and trash; straighten waiting areas.
• Reflect knowledge of current professional practice standards, laws, and regulations; evaluate own nursing practice in relation to these standards.
• Engage in annual self-assessment to identify areas of strength and professional development.
• Seek and reflect on constructive feedback from the healthcare team.
• Acquire and maintain current knowledge and competency in nursing care through ongoing education (e.g., BLS, NAPPI).
• Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
• Perform all other tasks and projects assigned by the Charge Nurse/Clinical Coordinator; act as backup for other staff members as needed.
• Interact with and contribute to the professional development of peers and other healthcare providers.
• Share knowledge, skills, and experience with colleagues; provide constructive feedback.
• Contribute to a learning environment conducive to healthcare education and teamwork.

Requirements

• Certificate Program in Licensed Practical Nursing or equivalent credit hours in an RN program.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) credential.
• New graduates may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• 2 years of LPN experience.

Pay

Salary range: $25.09+ per hour (BOE).

Schedule

• Status: Full Time (80 hours per pay period).
• Shift: Variable.

Location: Occupational Health, Dover, with floating at Milford as required.
