About the Role

The Licensed Practical Nurse, under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider, performs nursing care tasks and procedures consistent with individual treatment plans and scope of practice to maintain health, prevent and cure illness and injury, and alleviate suffering using practical knowledge of health processes and facility procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assists registered nurses, physicians, or other licensed health care providers in identifying individuals’ needs and participates in developing plans to address goals.
  • Administers medications and nursing procedures to individuals as prescribed.
  • Obtains and records individuals’ temperatures, blood pressures, pulse rates, and other vital signs using standard instruments and procedures.
  • Observes, monitors, and records individuals’ symptoms and conditions to provide information for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Identifies responses to medication or changes in health status and reports them to a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider.
  • Prepares individuals for or assists with examinations and treatments.
  • Maintains charts and other records of individuals’ conditions and/or administered treatments.
  • Attends to individuals’ personal needs, including activities of daily living and hygiene tasks such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and grooming.
  • Communicates with individuals, listens to their concerns, and encourages cooperation and participation in treatment and rehabilitation activities.
  • Educates and counsels individuals and/or families regarding health, medications, treatment goals, procedures, and behavioral interactions.
  • Observes and supervises the activities of unlicensed direct care staff, including medication administration, to ensure compliance with requirements and reports observations to a registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Performs housekeeping tasks, such as changing linens, and assists in cleaning activities to maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment.
  • Monitors supply inventories and completes requisition forms to ensure adequate supply levels.

Requirements

  • Current New York State Department of Health Veterans Home at Batavia employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as a Licensed Practical Nurse (for reassignment).
  • Current New York State employee with one or more years of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service in a position allocated to Grade 8 or above, and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law to Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • A license and current registration to practice as a practical nurse in New York State; OR a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State; OR an application on file for a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Long-term care experience.

Pay

Posted salary range ($45,081–$55,322) includes statutory hiring rate at step 4 and job rate for grade 10, plus a geographic pay differential of $4,000. If applicable, the inconvenience pay program of $575 per year will be paid to employees who work four (4) or more hours between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
