Position Overview

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), also known as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in some states, is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians. LPNs play a crucial role in patient care by monitoring patient health, administering medications, and providing comfort and support to patients and their families.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct patient care in various healthcare settings, focusing on basic nursing functions such as medication administration, vital sign monitoring, wound care, and patient education.
  • Work as part of a healthcare team to ensure patients receive safe, compassionate, and effective care.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

  • Direct Patient Care:
    • Maintain and record patient vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration).
    • Administer prescribed medications via oral, topical, and injection routes.
    • Perform basic wound care, dressing changes, and catheter care.
    • Assist patients with activities of daily living (bathing, eating, mobility).
    • Collect specimens for laboratory testing.
    • Observe and report changes in patient condition to supervising RN or physician.
  • Patient Monitoring and Assessment:
    • Conduct routine health assessments and screenings.
    • Monitor patient responses to treatments and medications.
    • Recognize and report signs of complications or adverse reactions.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and observations.
    • Absorb and assist with diagnostic procedures and tests.
  • Medication Administration:
    • Prepare and administer medications according to physician orders.
    • Verify patient identity and medication accuracy using safety protocols.
    • Monitor patients for medication side effects and therapeutic responses.
    • Maintain medication records and inventory.
    • Educate patients about medication purposes and side effects.
  • Patient Education and Support:
    • Provide basic health education to patients and families.
    • Teach patients about disease management and self-care techniques.
    • Offer emotional support and comfort to patients and families.
    • Absorb and assist with discharge planning and follow-up care instructions.
    • Promote patient safety and infection control practices.
  • Documentation and Communication:
    • Maintain detailed patient records and care plans.
    • Document all nursing interventions and patient responses.
    • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members.
    • Participate in shift reports and team meetings.
    • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and facility policies.
  • Equipment and Supply Management:
    • Operate and maintain basic medical equipment.
    • Ensure proper sterilization and cleaning of equipment.
    • Monitor and order supplies as needed.
    • Maintain clean and organized work environment.

    Required Qualifications

    • Education and Licensing Requirements:
      • Current state licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
      • Current BLS certification.
      • Previous healthcare experience.
      • Clear background check and drug screening.
