Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Ambulatory Float Pool

This position supports the Ambulatory Float Pool, providing staffing for ambulatory clinics across the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist region, with a focus on the Northwestern areas (Elkin, Hickory, Mt. Airy, Sparta, Statesville, Wilkes, etc.) and coverage extending as far east as Winston-Salem, NC. Clinics offer a range of care including primary care, internal medicine, specialty care, OB/GYN, and pediatrics.

Requirements

• Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license to practice in the applicable state (dependent on practice location).
• Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required per policy guidelines.
• Minimum of two years of direct patient care experience.
• Previous medical office experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide or arrange appropriate patient care within the scope of nursing practice and office specialty.
• Accurately document all patient care and interactions in the medical record.
• Participate in telephone triage, collecting patient data and providing instructions based on established protocols or provider orders.
• Track and log ordered laboratory and diagnostic tests, ensuring providers receive all results.
• Engage in pre-visit planning with providers and care teams.
• Administer medications, including injections, and check vital signs, height, and weight.
• Assist with reviewing and updating medication history.
• Support satisfaction of health maintenance requirements as needed.
• Assist providers during procedures and examinations, including instrument and room clean-up.
• Adhere to standard precautions, OSHA, CLIA, TJC, DFS, and other regulatory standards.
• Report patient conditions and reactions to providers following procedures, medication administration, or treatments.
• Assist with patient inquiries for prescription refills, appointment scheduling, and referral authorization.
• Participate in electronic documentation of care as directed by the provider.
• Enter orders in the EMR (CPOE) per provider instructions.
• Perform CLIA-approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing, including Point of Care testing (e.g., Hemoglobin A1C).
• Adhere to CLIA standards for quality control and maintenance of in-office lab procedures.
• Perform venipuncture and assist with specimen collection (e.g., urine, blood) for laboratory testing.
• Complete lab requisitions and prepare specimens for pick-up.
• Provide patients with a Depart Summary and review it at the end of the visit.
• Manage vaccine and pharmaceutical orders, including compliance with state Immunization Registry (NCIR) and SC DHEC regulations, and monitor clinical supply inventory.

Physical Requirements

• Consistent walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
• Ability to lift and support up to 35 pounds for patient handling, medical equipment, and supplies.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
• Must speak, read, and write English fluently.
• Intact senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch, along with manual finger dexterity.
