About the role
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Responsibilities
- Performs all duties within the scope of the LPN or LVN license, requiring routine or detailed higher level review depending on the complexity of the duties involved.
- Works with RN and/or MD/DO to orient/train less experienced LPNs/LVNs and NAs/HTs in relation to acceptable standards of practice in promoting optimal patient care delivery.
- Prepares and administers prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous) and documents actions taken.
- Recognizes and appropriately responds to emergency situations, seeking assistance as necessary.
- Observes and documents patient's response to medications and reports any changes in condition to RN or MD/DO.
- Carries out support duties for complex diagnostic tests and specialized procedures, preparing patients and assisting in examinations.
- Communicates with patients and families about medication, equipment, and treatment regimens.
- Participates in team conferences and communicates with the Nurse Manager.
- Collects and evaluates data as instructed by the Nurse Manager or designee.
- Teaches patients and families about the disease process and plan for care and rehabilitation.
- Identifies patient's educational needs and assists with teaching as appropriate.
- Maintains inventory of reusable instruments, equipment, medical devices, or supplies, following SOPs and consulting SPS and Infection Prevention and Control as needed.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved school of practical or vocational nursing.
- Active, full, and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
- At least 1 year of experience as an LPN or LVN in a healthcare setting.
- Proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to diverse patient populations.
- Knowledge and ability to prepare, administer, and document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed medications.
- Ability to recognize and respond to emergency situations and initiate appropriate interventions.
- Knowledge of human behavior and ability to work effectively with patients, family members, and other staff.
