About the role
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, quality patient care and services under the direction of a Registered Nurse. As a member of a designated care team, the LPN collaborates with team members to achieve patient care goals while adhering to the philosophy, standards, objectives, and policies of the department and organization.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates competency in performing treatments and procedures.
- Assists in achieving patients' respiratory needs, including aerosol and inhalation treatments, encouraging coughing and deep breathing.
- Performs oral and endotracheal suctioning.
- Performs therapeutic procedures and treatments.
- Inserts and removes Foley catheters.
- Performs EKGs.
- Conducts phlebotomy for blood collection.
- Inserts IVs and maintains lines.
- Assists patients with and reinforces the use of therapeutic equipment (e.g., incentive spirometer, hot and cold packs).
- Performs patient prep.
- Prepares and administers medication, observing patients' responses.
- Demonstrates knowledge of medication actions, dosages, and side effects.
- Safely administers medications allowed by New York State law and organizational policies.
- Obtains and records vital signs, height, weight, and head circumference.
- Collects specimens and documents findings.
Qualifications
- Certificate of completion from a practical nurse course of study.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience working within an ambulatory setting preferred.
- Demonstrated clinical, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture and administer medications, including immunizations.
- Basic computer skills, including typing.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to organize care and activities for multiple patients.
- Current New York State LPN license and registration.
- Current BCLS, Infection Control, and Child Abuse Certificates required.
