About the role
The Licensed Practical Nurse position is located at the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS), Primary Care section, in Anchorage, Alaska.
This is an open-continuous announcement. It establishes a standing register of eligible applicants which closes on 9/30/2026 or until all positions have been filled. Positions will be filled as they become available. There will be multiple cut-off dates used to consider applications for referral to the selecting official.
Responsibilities
- Works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (i.e., patient aligned care team)
- Primarily responsible for patient and clinic flow, efficiency of the clinic, customer service, and teamwork
- Develops/maintains effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
- Checking vitals, processing reminders, reviewing and processing alerts appropriately, administering medication, participating in team huddles and meetings to manage and plan patient care
- Setting priorities and deadlines; adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs; may work with the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and entering appropriate information into the electronic record
- Monitoring pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure (e.g., X-ray, lab work)
- Participating and providing input in problem solving on operational issues or procedures in team meetings
- Participating in and independently following up on team huddles by sharing information and collaborating with the medical team to assure continuity of care
- Evaluating patient information and clinic schedule lists to determine whether patient is vested
- Educating providers about shared patients (those who receive their care at multiple VAs or those who have care in the community) and bringing to the attention of the provider
Requirements
- Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship; Graduate of an approved school of practical or vocational nursing; active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse.
Qualifications
- GS-03: None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license.
- GS-04: Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; OR Graduation from an approved school (which may be waived as provided in paragraph 4 of Section C) and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures; OR Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
- GS-05: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-4 LPN/LVN.
- GS-06: Completion of at least one (1) year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN.
