Licensed Practical Nurse

About the role

The role involves performing nursing care tasks and procedures consistent with individual treatment plans and scope of practice, under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider.

Responsibilities

  • Assists registered nurses, physicians, or other licensed health care providers in the identification of individuals’ needs and participates in the development of plans to address goals.
  • Administers medications and nursing procedures to individuals as prescribed.
  • Obtains and records individuals’ temperatures, blood pressures, pulse rates, and other vital signs using standard instruments and procedures.
  • Observes, monitors, and records individuals’ symptoms and conditions to obtain and provide information for diagnosis and treatment; identifies responses to medication or changes in health status; and reports such to a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider.
  • Prepares individuals for or assists with examinations and treatments.
  • Maintains charts and other records of individuals’ conditions and/or administered treatments.
  • Talks to individuals, listens to their concerns and responses, and encourages them to cooperate and participate in treatment and rehabilitation activities.
  • Educates and counsels individuals and/or families regarding their health, medications, treatment goals and procedures, and behavioral interactions as appropriate.
  • May perform housekeeping tasks, such as changing linens, and assist other staff in cleaning activities to ensure a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for individuals.
  • Makes observations and supervises the activities of unlicensed direct care staff, including the administration of medication, to ensure compliance with applicable requirements and reports observations to higher-level staff.

Requirements

  • Either A: A license and current registration to practice as a practical nurse in New York State;
  • OR B: A limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State;
  • OR C: An application on file for a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State. (You must be approved immediately following graduation from an approved school of practical nursing in New York State to qualify under this option.)

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Either A, B, or C as described above. Must obtain license within one year of limited permit issuance.

Skills

Knowledge of health processes and facility procedures, ability to communicate effectively with individuals, and practical knowledge of nursing care tasks and procedures.

Schedule

Thirteen (13) paid holidays each year. Thirteen (13) days of paid vacation leave initially. Five (5) days paid personal leave each year. Thirteen (13) days of paid sick leave each year (PEF/CSEA), which may carry over from year to year. Up to three (3) days professional leave each year to participate in professional development events.

Pay

The posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 10 ($45,081), along with any special salary treatments in effect for this position in this location, such as a Geographic Pay Differential ($4,000) and Increased Hiring Rate ($5,852). Geographic Pay Differential is also added to the job rate ($55,322).

Additional Comments

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title. Employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status within one year of permanent appointment. Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures. If you are being impacted by closure, please indicate this on your resume. All OPWDD employees must be eligible and maintain eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Continued employment will depend on maintaining eligibility.
