About the Role
Under the direction of the District Librarian, the Library Media Technical Associate (LMTA) provides mentoring, in-service education, and troubleshooting support for library media software and hardware. Under the supervision of the District Librarian and site principal, the LMTA assists with media technology activities, processes and shelves media materials, and supports students and staff in selecting appropriate resources.
Responsibilities
- Provide support to district library media assistants under the direction of the District Librarian.
- Assist with training and professional development of school library media assistants, including:
- Organizing and presenting workshops on newly adopted software (e.g., Alexandria, PowerSchool).
- Attending training sessions with the Technology Department.
- Communicating methods for machine-readable cataloging, MARC records, budget monitoring (Excel), lesson planning, and presentations (PowerPoint/overheads).
- Provide troubleshooting for software and equipment; initiate help tickets for repairs.
- Serve as a mentor to a designated group of Library Media Assistants.
- Organize and maintain routine operations of a school library media center, including:
- Maintaining and weeding the collection.
- Receiving, processing, circulating, and shelving print and non-print materials.
- Assisting teachers in teaching basic information literacy skills (access, use, and evaluation of materials).
- Helping students and teachers locate and select appropriate materials; supporting special projects or conducting story time.
- Maintain records of library activities, including circulation, monies collected, and lost materials.
- Schedule library media times for classes.
- Train, assign, and monitor work of volunteer and student helpers.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and disciplined library environment conducive to learning.
- Create displays to promote reading and library media themes.
Requirements
- Recent experience providing library media services in a school setting.
- Demonstrated skills in library media center methods, practices, terminology, and procedures.
- Ability to provide leadership, mentoring, and technical assistance to Library Media Assistants.
- Experience with automated online public access catalogs, district student databases, and circulation system integration.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting equipment (computers, scanners, digital cameras, printers) and software.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well with children and adults using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college’s Associate of Arts program in Library Media Technology or a certificate from a Library Media Technology program or completion of a library media program from an accredited college combined with at least 2 years of school library media experience.
- At least two years of successful work history in a K-8 school library or in the children’s department of a public library.
- Some positions may require bilingual skills in Spanish.
