Library Clerk
Non-Exempt, Regular Full-Time position (40 hrs/week) or Part-Time (30 hrs/week) with day, evening, and/or weekend shifts. May serve as lead clerk or team leader in assigned areas.
About the Role
The Library Clerk is responsible for assisting patrons in accessing and obtaining information and library materials. This position requires daily contact with the public and a sincere desire to help patrons meet their needs. The individual may be required to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and shifts.
Responsibilities
- Assist patrons of the City’s Library in accessing and obtaining information and library materials.
- Follow all Library rules, policies, and procedures.
- Input, check, verify, and create bibliographic information.
- Repair and process Library materials.
- Shelve books and materials on a daily basis.
- Set up and operate Library equipment, computers, and media/software.
- Answer patron telephone calls and provide verbal assistance regarding library materials.
- Box and sort donations from patrons; assist in unloading donated materials from vehicles.
- Assist in maintaining discipline in the library and on Library grounds.
- Record statistics and prepare reports.
- Perform basic typing, filing, and office procedures.
- Check books in and out of the Library.
- Clean and dust Library shelves, desks, computers, walls, floors, and work areas.
- Pick up books left throughout the Library.
- Monitor and assist with computers.
- Shift books and other Library materials as required.
- Cover lunches and work at other public service desks.
- Participate in department and Library meetings.
- Assist with closing of the Library as needed.
- Set up for events and programs inside or outside the building.
- Assist with programming, special projects, and preparation of displays.
- Keep storage and work areas clean and organized.
- Perform other duties as delegated or assigned by the Supervisor.
Requirements
- High school graduate/GED or equivalent in experience.
- Some experience or expertise in library functions and activities is expected and preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.
- Must pass a complete background investigation, drug screening, physical, and pre-placement screening at the City’s expense.
- Must have a current valid class “C” driver license with no more than two (2) moving traffic violations within the past two (2) years.

- Effective oral and written communication in English; Spanish a plus.
- Fine and gross manual dexterity for tasks such as typing, filing, handling books, and operating equipment.
Work Environment
The majority of the time is spent indoors in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment. Job hazards are low and include normal office hazards as well as specific hazards related to library materials, stacks, electrical (e.g., computer networks, audio/video players), and mechanical equipment (e.g., book trucks).

- Telephones, CD/DVD ROMs, and internet/online reference tools.
- Library material collections and circulating items.
- Copy and fax machines, office supplies (pens, pencils, highlighters, calculators, staplers, rulers).
- Policy and procedure handbooks.
Pay
$12.00 per hour.
