Library Assistant - Pierce County Public Library
About the role
The Three Rivers Regional Library System is seeking an enthusiastic and reliable Part-Time Library Assistant to join our team. You'll play a vital role in providing excellent library services, helping patrons, and supporting various library operations.
Responsibilities
Essential functions include:
- Providing services to patrons by checking materials in and out, collecting fines, answering directional and reference questions, copying materials, placing holds on items, issuing new and replacement cards, explaining and upholding library policies and procedures, explaining and teaching about the library’s computers, and responding to telephone inquiries.
- Collecting payment for lost or damaged materials and overdue fines.
- Assisting patrons with utilizing online reference sources and databases.
- Providing assistance and education for requesting items from other libraries in the PINES system and contacting patrons when items come in.
- Providing reference assistance as requested; assisting patrons with locating materials, both in the library’s collection and online resources through the Three Rivers Website.
- Sorting and shelving materials; cleaning and examining shelves to ensure books are in the proper order.
- Searching for missing items in the library.
- Retrieving items from the book drop throughout the day and checking them in.
- Mending worn and/or torn materials.
- Planning and conducting programs with other employees.
- Promoting all library programs and resources to the patrons and community.
- Preparing holiday and seasonal displays.
- Performing technical service duties such as entering data into the computer, processing items, replacing barcodes, conducting inventory, assisting and instructing the public in the use of public computers and giving basic Internet instruction.
- Explaining the policies and procedures for the use of the community room to interested patrons, while completing the proper paperwork and scheduling procedures for the room.
- Performing general clerical duties such as typing, filing, and faxing.
- Attending all staff meetings and regional training.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, with some college education preferred.
- One (1) year of experience working with the public in a customer service role.
- Comfortable in use of technology for business purposes.
- Ability to adapt to multiple demands and changing priorities, to learn, and be willing to embrace change.
- Proficient in verbal and written communication.
- Intuitive ability to listen carefully and openly.
- Capacity to interact in a positive, effective manner with all team members and the general public.
Work Environment
The work is typically performed in a library setting. The physical demands include the ability to sit or stand for extended periods, lift and carry materials weighing up to 35 pounds, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach, and manual dexterity to operate computer equipment and other office machinery.
Benefits
This is a part-time non-exempt position with a starting pay of at least $10.00/hr, one (1) floating personal day (8 hours) per calendar year, six (6) hours of holiday pay for Thanksgiving and Christmas days, and access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), providing confidential counseling, financial advice, and legal resources at no cost.
Pay and Schedule
Part-time: 19.5 hrs/wk - may include Saturdays, with a pay rate of $10.00/hr.
