Job Summary
About the role
Provides reference and reader's advisory services to library customers. Evaluates and selects materials for purchase and deletion. Tracks materials budget. Plans, coordinates, and provides library programs and outreach services. Assists customers in the use of personal computers and electronic resources.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates and selects materials for purchase and deletion in the assigned area.
- Maintains the library materials budget.
- Develops, maintains, and participates in outreach activities to promote the use of library materials and services.
- Creates, coordinates, and provides programs, activities, and resources for the library.
- Serves as librarian-in-charge as assigned or on a rotation basis, handling emergency situations as well as customer complaints.
- Participates in training workshops, committees, task forces, and other professional development activities.
Requirements
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, or in Library and Information Science.
- One (1) year of professional Librarian experience in a public library or school library/media center.
- Preference will be given to candidates with MLS/MLIS degrees.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Principles and practices of public librarianship.
- Collection development principles and practices.
- Reference/reader's advisory techniques and resources.
- Programming and outreach methods.
- Basic budgeting principles and recordkeeping.
- Marketing and merchandising techniques.
- Telephone etiquette.
Skills
- Operate personal computer, automated library system, and other standard library equipment.
- Software related to job-specific duties.
- Plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments.
- Develop age-level appropriate programs.
- Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Problem solve and make sound decisions.
- Work effectively with people from diverse social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Organize data and track expenditures.
- Handle emergencies and appropriately resolve complaints and conflicts.
