Librarian I - Southwest Library

Pima County Public Library is seeking a Librarian I to provide direct customer service, assist community members with library resources, and support patrons in using collections, catalog, technology, and equipment. This role also involves creating and leading engaging library programs for adults and serving as the librarian in charge of the building at times. Spanish-speaking skills are strongly desired. The position may require working rotating shifts, including evenings and weekends, and the ability to travel between assigned library locations during the workday.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee assigned service areas (e.g., youth or adult services) by developing, presenting, and coordinating inclusive services for all community members, including vulnerable populations.
  • Serve as the supervisor in charge of the library as assigned.
  • Assist the public in finding and relaying library and community resource information, including help with collections, catalog, technology, and equipment.
  • Develop, facilitate, and present evidence-based educational programs and services, such as early literacy programs, community outreach, youth advisory boards, and computer/technology instruction (in-person or virtual).
  • Supervise library employees, volunteers, and interns by training, scheduling, and evaluating performance, including recommendations on probationary periods, discipline, and HR-related matters.
  • Implement public service best practices, including culturally competent programming, public relations, problem-solving, conflict management, and complaint resolution.
  • Use conflict management skills to de-escalate volatile situations and complete associated documentation.
  • Perform facilities management duties, such as monitoring and reporting maintenance issues and resolving operational or technical problems.
  • Participate in or facilitate systemwide committee meetings focused on youth services, adult services, strategic directions, or core values, and attend relevant continuing education trainings.
  • Manage and prioritize workload, including monitoring resources, establishing timelines, assigning work, tracking progress, and writing or reviewing reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, Liberal Arts, Social Science, Information Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field (as determined by the department head).
  • Three years of experience in libraries, customer service, education, social services, or a related field.
  • Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the application.

Qualifications

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Preferred: Minimum one year of library experience.
  • Preferred: Minimum two years of technology experience (e.g., email, eBooks, Microsoft Office Suite, personal electronic devices, library website, Google Forms/Docs, and integrated library systems).
  • Preferred: Minimum one year of experience developing programs for adult services.
  • Preferred: Experience providing work direction to others.
  • Preferred: Bilingual (English/Spanish) in speaking, reading, and writing.

Pay

  • Hiring Range: $53,872 – $64,625 annually.
  • Full Pay Range: $53,872 – $75,379 annually.

The actual salary offer will consider factors such as skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Schedule

  • Rotating shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Additional Information

  • Some positions may require a valid Arizona Class D driver’s license.
  • Pre-employment background checks, including work history, education, and criminal conviction verification, are required.
  • Physical/sensory requirements may include squatting, grasping, speaking (in-person and on the phone), and color vision.
  • Primarily works in a public library environment serving diverse populations.
